Raptor RB project
Rossmcleod - 28/6/15 at 08:19 PM

I'm new to the kit car forum
Hi guys

The project has started

My plans

Kit car with a skyline engine
Target weight 600 kg

Standard skyline engine puts out standard 320ishhhhh give or take

Rossmcleod - 28/6/15 at 08:34 PM

Skyline engine

Dopdog - 28/6/15 at 08:38 PM

that is one massive engine. Looking forward to more pictures and progress reports.

marco - 28/6/15 at 09:04 PM

250hp Standard.

Going to watch this carefully, I've owned a lot of skylines, tuned and rebuilt the engines and done a full conversion previously although not in a seven chassis.

Rosco86 - 28/6/15 at 09:11 PM

Looks like it could be a nice build!

Rossmcleod - 28/6/15 at 09:36 PM

With a map and a few bits and bobs it will go to 320ishhh stage 1

gaz_gaz - 29/6/15 at 04:14 PM

I done a RB25 swap into an S13 about 10 years ago and weighed the motor and box before fitting. From memory the dressed engine and box weighed in over 300kg. 600kg maybe a little optimistic.

Rossmcleod - 29/6/15 at 05:04 PM

It's very optimistic mate the engine weights about 300 and the gearbox is 45kg ha ha

it's very optimistic a lot of stuff can be taken off because a don't need it like aircon and stuff

wylliezx9r - 29/6/15 at 05:33 PM

With that much torque I don't see weight being a problem.

scudderfish - 29/6/15 at 05:37 PM

OK, I'll be the first.....

Can I have a go when it's done?

Rossmcleod - 29/6/15 at 06:44 PM

Ya no prob lol

It's going to be lively wee beasty ha ha

Rossmcleod - 13/7/15 at 05:26 PM

Good for them

I'm going to leave there arse on the starting line ha ha

Rossmcleod - 17/7/15 at 09:41 PM

It's crazy the difference from new to old

Rossmcleod - 25/7/15 at 11:04 PM

Little update
Getting the roll cage welded together

Rossmcleod - 2/8/15 at 09:10 AM

Wee update
Frame is finished going to powder coat next week

Rossmcleod - 5/8/15 at 08:03 PM

Not much has happened waiting on the frane coming back from the powder coater.

On the plus side new 1.5mm head gasket has arrived

Rossmcleod - 19/8/15 at 05:45 PM

Frames back from the powder coater

Next job is fit engine do wiring

After wiring finished I get to pick it up and the project is all mine

[Edited on 19/8/15 by Rossmcleod]

Rosco86 - 19/8/15 at 06:48 PM

Looking good, did you have the chassis blasted before powder?

Rossmcleod - 19/8/15 at 07:29 PM

Sand blasted mate

[Edited on 19/8/15 by Rossmcleod]

Rossmcleod - 27/8/15 at 07:42 PM

Front inlet plenum arrived this morning
The front inlet plenum usually exits in the middle so this one has been modified

[Edited on 28/8/15 by Rossmcleod]

Rossmcleod - 27/8/15 at 07:45 PM

So a brought a r34 standard intercooler vs r33 standard intercooler
Here's a pic comparing the 2

The r34 is a wee bit bigger and a wee bit thicker

A also sandblasted it to give it a clean and then blasted it with air :grinno:

Then hung up to paint

Painted with primer then 1st coat of black

[Edited on 28/8/15 by Rossmcleod]

CosKev3 - 28/8/15 at 07:59 AM

Jesus it will be a handful! :O

Rossmcleod - 23/9/15 at 09:40 PM

Little update

Fitted the base to the frame

Also test fitted the engine make sure it fits

[Edited on 23/9/15 by Rossmcleod]

Ugg10 - 23/9/15 at 09:49 PM

Nice project, was very clise to buying a spaceframe anglia with this running gear in it about two years ago.

Any reason you used standard rivets on the floor rather than the big head ones that spread the load more? Encased prop tunnel is interesting though.

Rossmcleod - 23/9/15 at 10:15 PM

There isn't really much weight on the floor anyway

A might fit bigger rivets later if a feel it needs it

CosKev3 - 24/9/15 at 07:15 AM

I would change them now,the floor has to take the weight of you or your passengers standing on it whilst getting in/out of car.

Looking at pics your having this built at SKC?

Rossmcleod - 24/9/15 at 01:17 PM

Yes there building a bit of it
I mean there only doing the wiring and am doing the rest

sdh2903 - 24/9/15 at 01:31 PM

You really could do with a load more rivets. The smaller head ones are fine but need lots more or Mr IVA man won't be happy. I'm sure it comes under general construction standards somewhere. Most people have rivets pitched around every 50mm/2".

The bigger head rivets are best for riveting bodywork/fibreglass.

Rossmcleod - 29/9/15 at 09:55 AM

Picked up the frame

Now time to build myself
Fun and games begin

Rossmcleod - 30/9/15 at 06:09 PM

Brake lines the night :-)

Rossmcleod - 15/10/15 at 09:30 PM

It's slow but spent a few hours the night doing the brake lines

Rossmcleod - 18/10/15 at 01:36 PM

Few hours this morning
Few more pics

CosKev3 - 18/10/15 at 02:39 PM

Where do your master cylinders/brake pipes come out through bulkhead?

If that T piece is for a brake light pressure switch they are better mounted so the switch points towards the ground,as people have had issues bleeding up the brakes with the switch mounted facing upwards.

Rossmcleod - 18/10/15 at 03:47 PM

This is what a have so far mate
I'm waiting on a new tee (that ones ducked) so it's just sitting there for the time being then a will pipe it up

[Edited on 18/10/15 by Rossmcleod]

Rossmcleod - 29/10/15 at 10:51 PM

Fuel lines sorted till fuel tank is fitted and engine in

Plus grp panels arrived

Picking them up

CosKev3 - 29/10/15 at 11:02 PM

Will your diff fit in with fuel lines where they are?

Rossmcleod - 29/10/15 at 11:05 PM

Honestly not sure maybe

The diff is arriving next week we will find out then

CosKev3 - 29/10/15 at 11:11 PM

Oooppps.

Fitting the diff is a good idea before running your brake and fuel lines.......

Rossmcleod - 29/10/15 at 11:18 PM

Bit late now

Worst comes to it a can move the fuel lines

[Edited on 29/10/15 by Rossmcleod]

Rossmcleod - 30/10/15 at 10:37 PM

Fitted the arms and coilovers

Front coilovers

Rear coilovers

Rossmcleod - 6/11/15 at 08:37 PM

Fitting side panels

Temp fit before proper fit

Had to cut the panels
The frame is 6 inches bigger than ur normal frame because of the size of the engine

[Edited on 6/11/15 by Rossmcleod]

CosKev3 - 6/11/15 at 09:03 PM

What are your plans for the side panels?

Did SKCC recommend the Gaz coil overs?
Just wondered as I know the chassis is built by MK and they don't recommend Gaz,they use Protec now.

Rossmcleod - 6/11/15 at 10:13 PM

Planning on making a vent to cover the gap

The 3" exhaust exit is there too so will build something

Rossmcleod - 6/11/15 at 10:14 PM

What's wrong with gaz coils

Rossmcleod - 8/11/15 at 10:31 AM

What's wrong with gaz
Why do they not recommend gaz

Did they not use gaz before they changed to protec

Yeah they did use them before.
Drop Danny a message on here and ask why they are better, didn't go into details just said they no longer use Gaz due to Protech being better for around the same cost.

Rossmcleod - 8/11/15 at 04:50 PM

A thought u knew that's why your bringing it up

Rossmcleod - 19/11/15 at 11:20 PM

Here's a few more pics

Spend a few hours the night cutting the other panel and riveting first panel on

Rossmcleod - 20/11/15 at 06:51 PM

Cut the other side and started minting panels

Rossmcleod - 22/11/15 at 07:18 PM

It's been a productive Sunday

Spent a few hours fixing the panels one side

Plus also fitted the arms

Rossmcleod - 2/12/15 at 07:47 AM

Finished off fitting other panel and fitted arms

Plus more parts arrived

Rossmcleod - 2/12/15 at 10:56 PM

Diff fitting the night

Darek32 - 2/12/15 at 11:45 PM

Nice build.
Looks like fuel lines need no replacing.

It was a tight fit

Rossmcleod - 7/12/15 at 09:30 PM

Suspension fitted

It's coming together

Rossmcleod - 17/12/15 at 09:22 PM

Few more bits arrived

CosKev3 - 18/12/15 at 05:59 AM

Some nice parts there

Are they cortina spec front uprights?

[Edited on 18/12/15 by CosKev3]

Rossmcleod - 18/12/15 at 02:55 PM

Shiny bits

New pedal box

Rossmcleod - 25/12/15 at 01:45 PM

Rad fitted and mounted last night

[Edited on 25/12/15 by Rossmcleod]

Rossmcleod2012 - 3/2/16 at 12:13 PM

Spent a few hours today fitting rear panel

Next will be the arches and hubs when they arrive

Rossmcleod2012 - 3/2/16 at 12:14 PM

Few more pics

I've temporary fitted the panel just trying to decide where to fit the petrol cap

Rossmcleod2012 - 14/2/16 at 09:29 PM

It's coming together

Engine

Plus stuck the front wheels on gives me a idea how wide the cars going to be

Spent a few hours this morning cleaning head and fitting the head gasket

Timing belt is next
Brought a new one but the wrong size given lol waiting for the right belt to arrive then that's next on the list

Rossmcleod2012 - 27/2/16 at 06:57 PM

Temporary fitted the intercooler
R34 intercooler blocked one of the outlets and moved it into the top like the other side
Then painted black

It's a tight fit thankfully a decided a didn't want to run a oil cooler because there's no space

Rossmcleod2012 - 2/3/16 at 04:23 PM

Engines coming together

Tiger sealed the rear bulkhead sheet on the night

Also cut the carbon plastic sheet did fitted that too

Rossmcleod2012 - 4/3/16 at 12:26 PM

Fitted the engine the night

It was a pain in the arse but we got there
A have a ruff idea what's happening with the pipework and stuff

Wolf1e - 5/3/16 at 02:04 PM

Hi there

Great build mate. Looking very nice. Going to be a quick one!!!

Quick question, what is it that you have used for your boot panel pieces and where did you get it from?

Thanks
Wolfie

Rossmcleod2012 - 6/3/16 at 01:03 AM

It's a plastic carbon affect sheet mate

A brought it from Scottish kit car 01620 880763

Rossmcleod2012 - 9/3/16 at 11:28 PM

Little update

Rossmcleod2012 - 11/3/16 at 11:13 PM

Never thought of that

Looks good the now (a think)

A might change it one the car is finished

A have a idea for storage at the rear

Need to get the car running first

[Edited on 11/3/16 by Rossmcleod2012]

Rossmcleod2012 - 14/3/16 at 05:41 PM

Picked up the gearbox

Refreshed and painted

Rossmcleod2012 - 19/3/16 at 06:11 PM

I'm waiting on a few bits arriving before fitting the gearbox

I've started finishing off the brake lines

Back brake lines

Front lines

CosKev3 - 19/3/16 at 10:55 PM

Coming together

Are they cortina copy front uprights?

Pretty sure I've seen people say on here they have failed IVA for the front flexi brake hoses being fixed through the fibreglass body panel like yours are, they need to be on a bracket attached to chassis.

Rossmcleod2012 - 19/3/16 at 11:20 PM

Will double check about the flex hoses mate

A seen a car with it done and thought not a bad idea lol

CosKev3 - 19/3/16 at 11:55 PM

Pretty sure it's a failure because the fibreglass panel can flex/move,this can then lead to the solid/copper brake pipes fracturing.

Interested about the hubs/uprights as I thought the MK Indy R was designed to use Sierra geometry uprights?

Rossmcleod2012 - 20/3/16 at 12:56 AM

There new style alloy hubs there a few kg lighter than the standard ones

will try and find out for u

hkp57 - 20/3/16 at 11:06 AM

Mine were mounted the same way as yours and the IVA station you will be using had no problem with it.

Yeah I suppose if he's using same place as yours they were pretty easy going!

As yours had a couple of clear to see fails that passed.

Look really nice
Just wondering if all the geometry will be ok using Cortina spec ones,as my m8 built a Indy R and was told to use Sierra front uprights.

what are the clear faults

CosKev3 - 20/3/16 at 08:30 PM

The side repeaters built into the wing mirrors are not visible from the rear at all,IVA tests are usually really strict on this now, hence people having to mount them in the front or rear wings to be able to get the correct angles of vision.
There was another too, can't remember now but it's in a thread somewhere on here!

How do u know its not visable from behind?

Plus whats the other one if u don't mind looing into it mate cheers

CosKev3 - 21/3/16 at 01:43 AM

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=199620

Indicators in mirrors in that thread.

theduck - 21/3/16 at 07:23 AM

Foglight not being vertical was the other.

Ja5on - 18/5/16 at 10:29 PM

Great read.

Having a look at starting a kit car build myself just not sure which one.
