Do I need a big hole?
locost_bryan - 22/4/04 at 10:52 PM

Guys,

How big are typical 1-litre bike engines?

I want to work out how small I can make the engine bay, so I need an idea of how long/wide/high the common engine/trans are.

At this stage I don't know what's available locally, but there seem to be plenty of big jap bikes around....

Hi, Bryan,
Most bike engines are tiny.
I just measured my zx9 engine and it's about 17"/ 435mm wide/long and about 20"/ 510mm high.
Next to the Pinto engine in my brothers car, it looks like a starter motor!!
Cheers
Tim

Ive got a knackered 'blade engine casing you could use as a mock up if you want to come and pick em up from me (in West Sussex)

Thanks for the offer Chris, but it's a tad far to come - about 25000km round trip from here (West Auckland, NZ)

... I better update my signature

Anyway, from what I can find on the web, most bike engines are under 450mm wide/long and 450-510mm high, 120-180hp, 65-95kg, $700-3000 : definitely how fast to you want to spend
