Hello fellow Mac1ers,
ive fitted a Pinto lump in my ZR with std Mac1 engine mounts. Ive also fitted 38DGAS carb for now. My question is has anyone managed to find an air
filter that will fit under the bonnet without cutting any holes in it?? I dont want to cut holes just yet as later i may go for twin webbers or bike
carbs which will need a hole cutting in the side.
Ive got a Pipercross classic filter (KK3000 iirc) and will try that again later. Preliminary trials looked like it will be too high, but now i have
bonnet trimmed i willgive it another go. I did notice the air filter base plate has a rubber spacer block - can this be ommitted to gain some height
advantage?
For benefit of non Mac1ers, the engine in the ZR sits further back in the engine bay so relative position of carb is different to other manufacturers
cars. Plaese post your experiences anyway tho for inspiration.

I was actually thinking of tying one of those white face masks around for now while i get something better sorted. Is an air filter an SVA
requirement? My take is that if you dont have one there is nothing to test, but if you do have one then you have to make sure the risk of combustion
or chaffing on any other bits is controlled.
Ref the Pipercross - mine is the classic with the mesh over the top. Ive tried to reduce its height unsuccessfully (it now looks like its been in a
fight with an elephant and lost!). Are the foam types a bit more pliable (squishy)? or do they too have a steel mesh on the inside?
Has anyone fitted the pipercross types without using the rubber block under the carb baseplate. Im wondering if this is just a thick gasket or
actually required to allow them to fit. Ill try messing about with mine at the weekend, just interested to hear other solutions.

Youre havin a laugh re the flames coming out of the carb. If that was the case then why are paper filters used???? Surely they would combust at the first hint of flame.
I tried my Pipercross classic filter again last night. With the rubber gaskets it defo fould the bonnet (there are two rubbers about 5mm thick each).
With them removed it doesnt foul but 2 concerns show up - the mouth of the carb is close to the top of filter (inside face) and it might be tricky to
seal filter to the base plate. I have found though that with the mesh cut out and one rubber in place i might have a compromise. It will foul bonnet
but now being soft it is just deflected. Q - does anyone know if the carb will try and suck in the foam now that i have removed the mesh? i know that
several sock filters just look like they are unsupported but i dont know what they are like on the inside (ie do they still have some supporting mesh
inside).
Advice / guidance still greatly recieved.
I know on NS Dev's XE race car the original filters where being sucked into the trumpets.
Depends on the engine / clearance / strength of suck etc i suppose.
