Queen Elizabeth Class Carrier
slingshot2000 - 23/5/12 at 06:40 PM

A section of one of the new Aircraft Carriers is currently being towed up the East Coast. Apparently it has just passed Grimsby. I wouldn't mind taking Junior to see it but am not sure how to find out/work out what time it may be passing the coast near us. Probably the nearest point for us to get to easily would be Seaton Carew or Hartlepool.

Has any one any idea how long it would take a tug to tow a section of an aircraft carrier that far ??

Thanks
Jon

I will do. Apparently each section being built in 5 different shipyards arounnd the country. These are then all being towed to Fosyth on the West Coast, to be assemble in a pupose built dock.

Why on earth did I type Forsyth, when I meant Rosyth? For gawds sake, I even have a niece stationed there!!

Gordon Brown's constituency....can't think why they chose Rosyth then. It isn't even a commercial yard with 100s of years of ship building experience like somewhere on the Clyde or Harland & Wolff in Belfast.

I don't think Rosyth has ever been in Gordon Brown's constituency area, though it's a bit difficult to track due to parliamentary boundary changes over the years, he did live in the constituency that Rosyth is in, but you are correct in saying that Rosyth Dockyard is not a commercial yard, it's a Naval Dockyard, maybe that's why the final assembly is being done there. If it's jobs for the locals you're bothered about then maybe the current administration can find storage facilities for the seven Nuclear submarines that are stored at Rosyth in their constituencies.

You are correct, I didn't realise his constituency was the next one across. Roysth Naval Base (there are no Royal Dockyards left now) is operated by Babcocks who also run Devonport Naval Base.

If I remember correctly the primary reason was the availability of a large enough dry dock to build it in, and even at that it was extensively modified
