Good morning. I purchased a cambelt kit from www.buycartparts.co.uk and noticed some white scuff marks on the smooth side of the belt.
They have said it would not effect the running of the belt and have offered a £5 refund.
I don't really care about £5 because a engine rebuild costs more than that I would have thought
Do you think it should be okay?
Unsure if I would use it. Thing is, that's entirely subjective.
I don't know the manufacturer, whether you've bought this as a 'kit', I see no details on the belt, I don't know the
application, etc., etc. I'd expect 'some' evidence of manufacture, release agents, heat pressing, etc., etc., etc., but that does look
quite a bit of 'evidence'.
I exclusively fit 'Gates' (the belt in most OE/OEM kits), as a kit with tensioners, rollers, etc. These are not cheap, but neither are
valves. Even these, Vauxhall rate to only 40K miles on my aged Corsa.
It is a genuine Gates kit. Belt, roller, water pump and tensioner.
Looks like the details have been sanded off the belt.
Could well be out of date then, if its legit to start with.
The belt is the cheap bit.
I would ask for a replacement with the correct makings on it!
Too much risk in that one.
I only go to the original car dealer for a timing belt tbh it's one of the most important parts of an engine and not worth saving a few quid for

As the last post get a refund and buy one from a decent motor factors ,it could be a fake gates cambelt kit

This guide will help you check if the belt kit is a knockoff, the hologram will be the biggest giveaway.
You could also contact gates uk with the batch code from the label to find out when the belt/kit was made, they also would be interested if one of
their distributors is selling dodgy belts.

I've never seen a Gates belt without printing on the outside of it.
There was a power grip print on it after I checked again.

There seems to be a plastic missing from the edge of the roller.
I think this is some sort of return items. The belt is dodgy with scuff marks and the roller which was not even in a packet seems to be broken.
The tensioner was also not in a packet. The only item that is sealed was the water pump. The belt was loose and unpacked.

Send the lot back - too many warning signs.
That pulley will likely chop your belt in short order.
they are now asking me to take pictures of the old parts next to the new parts so I will do that. Luckly the old parts I had taken off the engine.
I won't let them get away with this one.
Idlers damaged belts been tampered with sent it back and get your money back .
Whatever it is, it should be of a reasonable quality and fit for purpose.
That isn't.
If they start getting shirty, check out the Distance Selling Regulations..
or email them the link to this thread. Done that before with problematic ebay sellers who don't want to refund, nothing worse than negative publicity, potentially costs them much more than the items refund cost. They keep it up, start a thread on piston heads.

getting the UPS emails.
I will give them the photos they require and see what they say. If they then come with another excuse then I will direct them to this thread.
