Sealing / Securing cv boots.

As per the title really,

I have a Freelander diff and I have purchased new boots from Landrover that are shaped specifically for the diff. I have tried to secure the boots twice by using tie wraps.

However on inspection there is a line of grease around the boot area where the boot has obviously leaked and been thrown out.

Is it a simple matter of trying to get the plastic ties tighter?

Could there be too much grease in the boot?

Should I try and seal using a gasket sealer?

Should I use a large jubilee clip?

Any suggestions.

I secure them with stainless ties but you need the tool for them ideally. Nylon ties aren't ideal as they stretch a bit although you'll see lots done with them. I wouldn't recommend sealant. It'll be very hard not to contaminate it with grease and can also act as lubricant to let the boot squeeze off the joint. Jubilees do work as long as there's room for the screw but are often a bit wide sometimes. I often use them where a car has plastic boots (Renault, GM, etc) with broken straps and standard ones won't tighten enough.

I've never got the stainless strips to work... For me it's uber-tight tie-wraps every time....
