Pop-up Headlights - Stratos

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place - unsure where to put it...

I had thought you could not use pop-up headlights on a kit car, but i checked the iva manual and it says this:

3. All lamps and reflectors fitted to the vehicle must not move by
swivelling, deflecting or otherwise while the vehicle is in motion, except
for:
• any lamp or reflector which by design can be deflected to the side
with the movement of the front wheel or wheels of the vehicle when
turned for the purpose of steering the vehicle
• a headlamp for adjustment or dipping of the beam
• a headlamp which can be retracted or concealed
• a work lamp, used to illuminate a working area or the scene of an
accident, breakdown or road works in the vicinity of the vehicle to
which it is fitted.

So i taking it you are able to add them...

Has anyone done this? If so, does anyone have picture, parts used, how much extra weight would this add?

My initial thought was finding a scrap mr2 mk1 for the bits...

I think you still can but have to be careful about radiuses. They seem to have disappeared from production cars, probably due to the risk to pedestrian’s heads in much the same way metal tube bull bars have gone out of favor.

My celica has it, the motor used in most is a wiper type, (2 park posistions open and closed).
The real pain for me is flashing someone, you need to wait for the headlights to lift.
There is also a posistion on the light switch to allow the lights to remain up.
I would guess there is a simple ecu control judging by the time delay for retraction.

As I understand it they are now banned --- the MX5 no longer has them.

If they are banned, how has the Hawk (stratos) kit car got through with them.

I am assuming it got through the sva, but with them still selling the kits, surely they must pass!!!

But does anyone know of any other kit car, or one off that someone has created that has them....

my understanding was they are not banned here, but they ARE banned in america, and because american markets are much bigger, theres no point in car companies making 2 different models of the same car.
and basically out of fashion

I think this says it all...

Agreed.... assuming they dont faul foul of any other rules... IE sharp edges etc

I thought that production cars had stopped using pop-up headlights and forward opening bonnets as EU rules required the lights to be visible when a car was broken down. Forward opeing bonnets generally would obscure the lights and pop-ups might not be able to pop-up if there was a fault.

Most cars with forward opening bonnets are hindged behind the grill and don't obscure the lights, I've seen this first hand on the XJ6 and on a mates old beemer. Forward opening bonnets are safer than regular ones because they won't open up is they break or are left open. I'd imagine the reason they don't fit them would be for the benefit of pedestrians being hit as they'd have heavy hinges where a normal one has just a clasp.

I think the pop up headlights disapearing is down to three main points, Americans Banning them (US car rules are much stiffer than ours), advances in Architecural lights (IE you could replace them with lights built in to the front of the car that would be aerodynamic, this was illegal in the US until fairly recently) and finally they're old fashioned because of the above reasons.

Production cars have much tighter restrictions than low volume cars though so they may be illegal on volume cars.

I've also got a feeling you can buy a hawk without pop up lights. I can't find it on their website but I'm sure I'e seen one and a google image search of Hawk HF appears to show one on the first page.
