ETB speedo on Mk2 gearbox speed sensor
Hi
Has anybody on here had a go at connecting up an ETB speedo to a Mk2 gearbox speed sensor?
ETB weren't a lot of help!
My plan is to get the car on axle stands and try to set it up, ideally, I could do with an oscilloscope to help.

was about to fit my digidash 2 to a type 9 (similar fitting I think).
Revotech do an adapter and then use a puma/fiesta/focus encoder. Encoder pattern and connections are -
Brown - ground, Yellow/Brown - signal, Black/brown - Live (12v/5v)
Signal is an equal square wave with (0-live feed amplitude) and 8 waves per rev.
Note the drive is geared to the output revs of the prop, so need to a bit of experimentation to work out the prop to encoder ratios.
ETB seemed to think that would work.

Hi
The MX5 sensor has a 2 wire output, I'm not sure whether it uses ground from the gearbox as I thinks it's a plastic unit.
I wish I'd had a play with it before I fitted the transmission covers (It's fitted to a Westfeild).

Done a bit of digging.
The MX5 gearbox output is a VR (variable reluctance) sensor which output a squashed sine wave.
I'm in the process of checking, but I think the ETB gauge requires a square wave.If so, I need a signal conditioner.
If this is the case, I reckon I can build one at work.
I'll post what I find.

The setup posted by Ugg10 is the same that I used on my Midget (4AGE plus type 9) with an ETB electronic speedo. Although the sensor can do 5 &
12v the speedo only worked with a 5v signal.

Sorry, my post was a bit misleading, when you said mk2 I naturally assumed escort not mx5.
Can you not use an etb pickup and use the two magnets on the prop/front or rear hub? Since moving from a type 9 to an rx8 I have converted to this.

Sorry!
Mk2 MX5.
I ended up putting one of the signal wires from the speed sensor to ground and the other to the brown wire on the gauge.
This seems to work, I just need to see if the gauge can handle the potential voltage from the sensor.
I had a signal conditioner made up at work, but couldn't get it working!

Any progress on this? How did it work out? Im looking at running a digital speedo off the mk 2.5 gearbox sensor if i can.
