Chain dif. driveshaft / upright options
Hi,
I'm trying to model up an original design for a small BEC with a chain drive dif at the back (either quaife or other equivalent). Currently
trying to work out what options exist for drive shafts and rear uprights for this. What do things like Spires and EvoBusas use?

Driveshafts will depend on the diff 'core' that you use.
The Quaife unit offers output shafts designed to mate with Lobros (a standard tripode CV joint commonly used in motorsport, but from memory the
diff. core that they use for their Torsen chain drive bike differential is based on their Ford Fiesta Mk. 5 unit, so Fiesta driveshafts shoould also
fit, but don't rely on my memory being correct - speak to Quaife themselves.
In the olden days, we used to commonly use Mini differentals as the 'core', in which case you'd use Mini driveshafts.
Uprights are usually fabricated or machined from billet, 'cos adapting the front upright from something like the strut suspension on a Fiesta
would be a bit crude and compromised. Though again, in the old days people did use Mini uprights - which were designed for a double wishbone
suspension in any case, albeit they were surprisingly heavy.

What you're saying regarding Fiesta compatibility for Quaife matches with what I've found too, and hopefully then compatible with other
small FWD fords. Been doing a bit more Googling / chatting to whoever runs the Rebel Performance Machines FB page (who was incredibly helpful) and
found the following:
- ExoBusa uses an adapted Blackline IB5 diff from Rally Design, with Focus ST170 shafts and hub bearings in a bespoke fabricated upright, with some
sort of Ford 4x108 hub (presumably also from a Focus? not sure).
- Rally Design website lists IB5 diff (HLF013) as compatible with: Escort FWD, Fiesta, Focus, KA, Orion, Puma. So hopefully lots of different lengths
to choose from.
- Demon Tweeks website lists Quaife QDF7ZR as compatible with Escort and Fiesta, so presumably the rest as well.
- Quaife, for all their very helpful technical drawings, don't directly tell you what it's compatible with, but they do show it mating to
one of their own LOBRO drive flanges (F7Z432). If you go to the page for the drive flange it gives the dimensions of the splined end, including the
spline specification, which presumably the spec of the Ford ends.
Next thing is searching for dimensions of the various Ford bits: available drive shaft lengths / bearings / hubs, so I can model them in and see what
fits best. Going to bed now, but if any kind person has any info and can save me the search, would be much appreciated

I wouldn't get too hung up on driveshaft lengths - it's easy enough to lengthen/shorten a driveshaft, or even to cut-and-shut the
differential side of one car's driveshaft to the outboard end of another's.

Yeah, would be nice to get something off the shelf though, and no reason not to if it's a clean sheet design with a fair few options.

I used a fiesta diff in mine with the same spline fitting. I got my diff, already converted to a chain drive by adding an outer casing with grease
nipples, bearings, sprocket and mounting plates, from here:

like you, i managed to use an off the shelf driveshaft but only on one side and had to get the other one made. i used this to get driveshaft lengths
and spline counts:
GKN Lobro
anything from an IB5 gearbox should work, Ford Ka, Fiesta, Focus. Complete driveshafts are avaialable cheaply from here:
JR driveshafts, ebay
i was told that the fiesta driveshafts would be too weak for my Hayabusa engine so i used Focus 1.8 petrol driveshafts as these are the torquiest
engine to use the IB5 gearbox and they've been fine so far.
My Sylva J15 uses custom made rear uprights but the Riot and J15 originally used inverted Fiesta Mk2 front hubs.

no, they were part of the Sylva kit. The Riot was taken over by Xmoor cars and they used to list the parts but they don't seem to be on the
website any more:
