Car Tax and DVLA

Well the reminder dropped on my mat a few weeks ago and i finally got round to going to the post office to stump up the readies.

Got my V5 just in case and my cover note AND certificate, also just in case

Got to the post office, handed over the paperwork. "do you have your MOT certificate sir", nope says I, "sorry, cant do anything without the MOT cert".

They send me to DVLA

Get to DVLA's (old) offices to find theyve moved, so go to the new place. Take my ticket and wait for half an hour before being seen to (ooh sir)

Girl asks me how she can help so i explain that Ive got a kitcar and its got an age related plate but that it was first registered in the UK in 2005 and that I didnt have an MOT cert last year and definately dont have one this year but that the PO wont process the tax disc because the reminder says I need an MOT cert.

A bit of too-ing ang fro-ing and I walk out 5 minutes later with a new tax disc.

woo hoo

Two options to save the hassle:

1) Do it online - quick, simple, no documents needed and it arrives in the post in a couple of days.

2) Download form V112 (exemption from MOT testing) from here: http://www.dvla.gov.uk/forms/onlineforms.aspx then the post office will not ask questions about not having an MOT.

PO's scan the log book and computer says what docs are required (i think). If the V5 was coded wrong then they will ask for MOT. I had similar issue 6 months after first registration - ended up sending paperwork into DVLA office. They issued V5 and returned docs to Swansea. Second tax time PO did ask for cert but i managed to baffle them and got the tax. Third time i did it online with no trouble.

Seems to be a hit and miss afair. Glad you got sorted out.

v hit and miss. I didn't do an MOT before SVA but when I got the renewal it said MOT required. Tried online and it also said it was required. Went to the PO with V5 in hand, explained, and they crossed out the line which said MOT required! Same thing after year 2

Next year I will need an MOT... or maybe not, as the tax disc runs out before the 3 year limit

Nice try but i know that you know that you will still need MOT even if you tax it a few weeks before its due.
