Drive Shafts....

I have this

and I need to undo this nut I assume to get the sierra hubs and bearing carriers off? (The car is using a freelander diff)

The nut is FT. So before I give myself a hernia trying to remove it, it does need to come off right? Any tips?!

I suppose the whole shaft may fit through the hole in your upright allow the bearing carrier to bolt on the outside. However, if you want to check/change bearings, it would be sensible to do it at this stage. They are VFT and the nearside (if you can tell off the car) is left hand thread.

Not easy with it off the car. Work out which thread is which one, maybe a bit of lube and big bar and bring on the hernia!!

Once youve worked out which thread youve got, get a long piece heavy weight flat bar or angle drill a hole in one end and bolt it onto the drive flange. Using a good quality socket with a long extension undo the nut allowing the bar to rest against the next stud.

Ok, so it is just FT then. Oh well. It does need to come off then...

I'll get 999 on speed dial for tomorrow...

I just did this to my bmw e30 drive shafts, off car (makes it pretty tough) I put the brake rotor back on which was buggered anyway and clamped that down in the vice. I had a 2m piece of pipe slid over my breaker bar and it still was tough!!!!!

Another option is to try friendly garage if you cant get them undone at home. Some may have a heavy duty pro impact wrench. You will still need long pry bar to lock between the studs though.

Not sure but you may be able to use a nut splitter if all else fails.

Well I managed to get the left hand threaded one off by myself but admitted defeat on the RHT.

A local Land Rover mechanic helped me out though...

So now I have it like this.

Do I need to remove the Hub end to fit to the Mac#1 supplied half shaft? If so, how do I get it off?

Thanks
Ed

Cheers Rich, they came apart nicely.

Just need to clean up the bits and reassemble now!

just be sure you fit the driveshaft end with the L/H thread to the shorter new shaft so it ends up on the N/S of the car(pass side)
