IVA front indicator stalks.
MsD - 29/9/12 at 05:15 PM

What are the benefits of having long stalks for your front indicators?
Obviously they need to be positioned so the meet the IVA measurements, but is there any benefits for the radius test?

I think I remember somebody telling me with a long stalk they couldnt get there sphere into the steering/ wishbones and it made it an exemption zone (from the front at least) Is this right?

Im just currently messing about with light positioning and mounting indicators- so any help/ pictures would be great!

Thanks, Mark.

There is indeed an exmpt zone within the theortical wishbone 'box'.

As above, but yes, as you say you can mount a light or use another item like the stalk to stop another item being testable as it is now no longer contactable

Cheers guys.

Theres a diagram similair to that in the IVA manual that ive been studying.

I was just wondering why you see so many 7's with huge indicator stalks.. looks a bit daft IMO.

I think it must be a matter of personal preferance, I have extended mine for IVA, but I like them as they are, so will keep them.

When you say you extended them for iva is that because it’s a requirement, or just to make it easier to pass?

Mine are currently just bolted to the nose cone – do I need to change that in order to pass IVA?

heres a pic I have with me today, the indicator is just visble in the bottom right hand corner

Thanks in advance

That diagram wa a cut and paste from the manual!

The reason you see them on no many 7s is nothing to do with exterior projections, Its beacuse the indicator needs to be within 400mm of the side of the car (at the widest point, usually the back).

So andrew, yours will defo fail on not being far enough out.

If you dont like the look of them, put them on for IVA then remove them, it wont need the extenders to pass the MOT so long as they work and its fairly obvious which is left and which is right 1

It's a requirement for IVA but not mot. They have to be within 400mm of the widest point of the car. Section 23 in the manual.

My extensions fell off on the way home from iva miraculously.

Mirrors would need to be quite high so you can keep the 45degree horizontal and 5degree vertial sightlines for the indicator on the opposite side from where you are standing. (ie the bonnet/skuttle may block the left hand indicator when standing on the right and vice versa)

Make sure you use the latest manual - http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Transport_files/IVA_M1_Inspection_Manual_1.pdf

I have mainly extended them to put the 2 chassis "ears" in the exempt area behind the extensions, although I am now not sure if this applies to IVA, as I think the area can be checked from the rear, in SVA it couldn't. If that makes sense.
