Mix and match diff/stub shafts/drive shafts
Gear Monkey - 6/5/14 at 10:24 PM

Hello,

I'm building a BEC with a freelander Diff and intending to use mx5 uprights. The dilemma here is getting everything to fit. Now the mx5 drive shafts like a sierra have a bolt on stub shaft and I believe (I'm sure I heard this somewhere) that sierra shafts will fit a freelander diff???

Now if this is correct would be possible to fit sierra stubs to mx5 shafts allowing me to fit them to a freelander diff??

Chances are this is a (very) long shot but you never know!

Thanks in advance

Paul

Sounds like you've got things a bit mixed up.

There are two types of Sierra shaft; Either push-in and bolt-on CV joints (in various sizes). Sierra bolt on joints are a 6 bolt "lobro" pattern in 2 sizes

Freelanders use push in joints.

MX5s use bolt-on shafts in 2 patterns (though there are a very few push in ones).

Now if you strip and remove the inner CV joints from Sierra and Freelander PUSH-IN shafts, then the splines match. You can fit the Freelander inner CV joint to the Sierra shaft, so you make hybrid push-in shafts (Freelander inner and Sierra outer). AFAIK the same doesn't apply to an other combo using the bolt on shafts.

One problem with the hybrid described, the Freelander is a floating joint and the Seirra is sprung, so causes the Freelander CV bearings to bottom out. There are ways around that though.

Sorry if that sounds complicated... but it is.

Thanks for the info

My mx5 shafts are the push in type with bolt on stubs. If it were possible to find / manufacture a stub which would push into the freelander diff that would be perfect.

If i recall the cv joints on the mx5 are of the sliding type. I wonder if the freelander inner would fit with the mx5 outer? I'll need to get both and start stripping them I guess.

Could this work as an interface between freelander shafts and mx5 hubs???

Ford Fiesta/Escort outer CV joints use 22 spline ended drive shafts which are the same as the ones used on the MX5 outer CV joints.
