While reading a 1988 copy of the Caterham build manual it says that their ideal, though difficult to source, RS2000 (live) axle is the ideal, being stinger with the right ratios.

Can anyone explain the difference between the RS2000 axle and the standard English? Can a RS2000-spec axle be built from other Ford parts?

The ford specific forums have covered this many times, mixing Cortina 1600E/GT internals in Escort Mk1 2 casings, Capri brakes etc. etc.....

i think the axle is the same apart from some anti tramp brackets

mk1 rs2000 had a 3.77 diff ratio

mk2 rs2000 had a 3.54 diff ratio

The half shafts are also different, as the RS2000 have centre spigots for the wheel to align on (excluding most after market wheels) where the normal ones only have a small lip and aline on the studs.

all rs2000 axles should come with 3.54 diff, but hardly anything is original any more

the casing also has tramp bar brackets, not much use to kitcar builders but useful if identifying an axle. as stated the halfshafts have a longer spigot but the shafts themselves are not any stronger.

so, theres no reAL advantage to the rs2000 axle unless you need the 3.54 diff - mk2 1600 ghia automatics came with a very similar axle, 3,54, 9 inch drums, big spigot shafts, no tramp brackets tho.
