Having a big change to my fleet which will result in me consolodating to one vehicle which will be a road going track car.
Much as the Locost is fun, it's track only and so is simply in the way 99% of the time and will take too much effort than I
have time for to make road legal.
I also have a Clio as a runabout but doesn't get used much as I use my van most of the time. A 2002 Corsa 1.0 but fitted
with a 1.8 SRi drivetrain. The last motor is an old Marlin that is correctly registered but not been on the road for over ten
years. Still rolls and turns over though.
I want to shift the lot and get a toy for max outlay of £2k, narrowed it to,
Clio 172
Mr2
Focus ST170
BMW 328I
Golf VR6
Would prefer RWD, considered an MX5 but not quite enough grunt.
Fuel consumption not an issue so any other suggestions ?

I bought an Evo IV with 276bhp for £2750 a couple of years ago.
since moved on through Renaultsport Megane R26 and now E46 M3. I think the Meganes can be found for about 3-3.5k now?

Having seen Clio 172's actually racing at Snetterton I would definitely favour them. Of course when there's twenty of them racing it's difficult to see their overall speed compared to other machinery, but it looked to be the best fun you could have on three wheels.

If I was on a track day and all of these cars were there (normally are give or tack). With sticky tyres and a handy driver the BMW would be the only one that would cause me some trouble.
BMW gets my vote.
I suppose it depends on how much grunt you want to play with and pay for, my two visits last year to track day/events saw an increasing number of MGF's as they are affordable.
Nicks MR2 sounds fun
But if Owelly fancies a swap for a nice Clio 1.2....can't get cheaper to run than that

id opt for a 182 clio there was a race prepared one at blyton a while back who ran circles round me in the radical! it was very very very very very very very wet though! more like swimming than driving!
The only car I have had with comparable performance to my little car was a revIII mr2 turbo with a few mods, exhaust and Zener diode to push fuel rail
pressure.
Handled like a go-cart with ~ 275+ BHP and hardly any weight really shifted.
RevIII is the one to get, later emissions strangled them, earlier and just not as powerful, so you are looking for a 94-97 car.

(hence the sale). It is road legal (just) and goes really well. I have a towing dolly you can have with it as well as some spare wheels and tyres.
