Volvorsport - 30/6/09 at 10:09 PM

well , on 19th june , the volvo world descended on thoresby hall , to show off genuine batteries and polished inner wings .

Some of you may spot the influence .

blakep82 - 30/6/09 at 10:10 PM

Steve Hignett - 30/6/09 at 10:12 PM

It's definitely true what they say:

The wheels do make the car!!!

graememk - 30/6/09 at 10:12 PM

UncleFista - 30/6/09 at 10:15 PM

me too , but , its in the style of the europeans who have no problem with putting all sorts of shite on the roof at shows .

the judges didnt understand either .

Jasongray5 - 30/6/09 at 10:24 PM

Got alot of time for that...!

blakep82 - 30/6/09 at 10:27 PM

might be a silly question, but whats involved in doing that?
the hubs look further in, and have the wheel actually been widened?

chrisg - 30/6/09 at 10:33 PM

I remember doing that to some Escort wheels with a stick welder.

The tyres were very definately not "tubeless"

Cheers

Chris

eccsmk - 30/6/09 at 10:44 PM

they're definitely wellers, but i didn't think you could get them that deep dished

Volvorsport - 30/6/09 at 11:09 PM

i made those wheels at work , balanced up nicely .

nothing more serious than inserting a 54mm band of steel into some original steel wheels .

blakep82 - 30/6/09 at 11:11 PM

ah, cool! didn't know it was yours.
what about the actual cars suspension? did that need modding?

Volvorsport - 30/6/09 at 11:19 PM

nope , it does catch on the arches , so theyve come off again .

in fact they were only on for 3 miles .

incidentally the tyre fitters blew two tyres up getting them over the weld bead .

ill make some more differently .

Don't get me wrong, I understand it, I've been seeing VWs doing it for years, I just think it looks crap

spaximus - 1/7/09 at 06:59 AM

It might be worth checking, but I used to make these in the 70s and at the time were quite popular. we had to stop as they were deemed illegal as all rims had to be one piece.

This appears to be a very popular misconception for some reason, they are not illegal.

It's not a Volvo Estate if it hasn't got roof bars and a fence panel or furniture on the roof

You won't find a law that specifically states they are legal, just as you won't find a law that states pink cars are legal!

However, someone on RetroRides wrote to VOSA regarding this:

I have a query about a specialist modification to steel car wheels over which there is much debate about legality.

The modification involves cutting off the outer part of the steel wheel rim, welding a band of additional steel to the wheel, then welding the outer rim back onto the band which has been inserted. The aim of the modification is to allow the wheel to accept a much wider tyre for increased grip. The welding is usually carried out by qualified welders.

Can you confirm whether there is anything within the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, or any other legislation, which prohibits the use of wheels which have been modified in this way?

Dear Mr Hilton

There are no specific regulations in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended (C&U) relating to the type of work you propose.
Regulation 100 of C&U does require that all parts fitted to a vehicle are not likely to cause a danger to the user of the vehicle or other road users. I have attached a copy of Regulation 100.
Additionally, you will need to ensure that the wheels do not protrude from the wheel arches, or that modifications are made to the bodywork of the vehicle to ensure that the wheels do not protrude.

Yours sincerely
