chesney321 - 28/12/10 at 01:28 PM

good luck with the ride

mangogrooveworkshop - 28/12/10 at 01:29 PM

Space blankets and a bivi survival bag.

perksy - 28/12/10 at 02:01 PM

Mobile phone with pre-loaded emergency number/s ?

Spare cable for brakes and/or gears ?

Good Luck with it, hope it goes well

bigruss - 28/12/10 at 02:14 PM

Sounds like a great adventure.

I'd also consider

at least one pump if not included in puncture repair kit

Chain tool and allen keys

map / compass

If it's proper off road, I would take a spare rear mech hanger mount as they can bend really easily.

Make sure the inner tubes are the right size. A mate of mine once got a puncture in the alps and his spare inner tube was for a bmx wheel. We all nearly wet ourselves!

bitsilly - 28/12/10 at 02:45 PM

When you say bivvy bag, do you mean one to use as a survival bag (ie orange plastic), because I wouldn't bother with propper ones if you have a tent as well.
You'll need meths for the Trangia and matches and back up flint stick.
Self inflating mattress or carry mat.
Batteries.
Waterproof liner or external waterproof cover for the ruc sack (I use a bivvy bag).
If you can use a solar charger how about sun block?
Deet and/or a midge net to put over your head (when are you going?)
Bike lock??
Duct tape and a swiss army knife.
sosmix is dehydrated and can make a change.
Water purification tablets.
A donkey or llama?
Insurance.

matt_gsxr - 28/12/10 at 03:08 PM

toothbrush
gloves
something to keep ears warm

Mal - 28/12/10 at 03:11 PM

You are taking spare spokes, so also needed will be a spoke key and a tool to remove the rear sprockets, because that is the side they usually break on.

A bottle of Laphroigh

As others have mentioned you need to put together a proper tool kit for the bikes, make sure you have spanners or allen keys for brakes, gears, saddle and seat post, handlebars and stem wheels if not quick release, gear and brake levers, cranks, chainset, bottom bracket, mudguards, racks and bottle cages if fitted, chain splitting tool, casette tool.

spares should be rear brake and gear cables (if fronts fail either cut short or roll up excess) spokes to it front and rear wheels, inner tubes, spare tyre puncture kit, pump, a few spare chain links, brake blocks.

Check that these items fit both bikes or double up.

As for the rest, make sure you have enough warm clothes and good quality waterproofs. Make sure you keep in regular contact with someone and give them your current location and next time you expect to check in so that the emergency services know where to look if the worst happens when you have no mobile signal.

Duncan

PS. good luck for the ride, that is a fantastic route for the summer but it could be a nightmare at this time of year if the weather turns bad.

sonic - 28/12/10 at 05:55 PM

Speaking as somebody who rode alot of 60 and 100 mile bike rides for charity in a past life i would try and lighten your load as much as possible,i would also suggest buying the proper energy drink from a cycling/sports shop.

I did what used to be called the York century ride (100 miles in a day) a few times for the Heart foundation and when you hit the wall physically you would be supprised how good the proper slow burn energy drinks are, also buy some Flapjack type food and keep it in your rear pocket (if your wearing a cycling top) and eat a little alot and they are great for energy endurance.

Good luck with it and post on here how to donate etc

jossey - 28/12/10 at 07:19 PM

As Sonic says, lighten your load as much as poss - so replace things that could break like chain, mechs cables etc with new before you start and they'll be fine for three days. If it's cold you won't wan to be changing rear mechs on a hill

Its for the time you have an accident and cant put up tent or shelter

bitsilly - 2/1/11 at 03:58 PM

I mean that you won't need to carry a goretex insulated one with a top hoop.
Personally I would use an orange plastic one, they are more visible and can be used to keep your stuff dry etc.

jossey - 2/1/11 at 09:57 PM

ok ill get the orange ones. :O)

i best add bog roll to the list too i guess.

thanks
