Converting 35mm film slides to image file?

I've found some lovely colour 35mm film slides of my dad with various cars taken in the 60's. Is their a technology or technique that can convert these to an image file, or am I wasting my time even asking a photography place?

Our old scanner had a facility for doing this and negatives built into it and it was quite effective with the help of a good graphics editor program. I think it was a Mustek, just a basic one really.

There may be companies that will do this for you where you are - there certainly are in the UK.

We've done some with a cheap (£30 ish) slide scanner at home and the results were good.

You need an even light source and the highest resolution the scanner can do
Would also be worth scanning in a RAW format or TIFF first then copying and converting the copy to your output format choice probably JPEG
Any version of photoshop will handle the scanner output and conversion to your required format

How's these examples below, found a local shop that does it at 0.35 UKP each so had a few done as a trial.

He owned both the MGA and the TC, here the TC is partially stripped for a "sprint". Note the MGA 16" wheels replacing the 19" TC wheels on the back to lower the gearing. Judging by what might be a licence disc on the car these were taken in 1958.

I have one of the cheapo ( £30 ) film / slide scanners from Maplin and have never managed to get good results. It just occurred to me I could project the slides and use a camera to record them.

Hi Fred - I used a dedicated 35mm to jpg scanner to do some 1500 slides - took about 12 hours of work and result was good. I think it was Ion - they make LP to mp3 turntables as well) it cost about R900 from Incredible Connection.
