bec gear slecting :(

got my mk on the road today after a complete rebuild. everything is mostly ok but got a couple of things that need sorting i.e tracking and gear selcting. obviously tracking il just go get done.

the selecting of gears is really doing my head in basicaly if i drive it steady i can select all gears fine (1down 5 up) then when i drive it hard i cant get the gears coming down the box 5/4/3/2/ its running the cable type linkage. but iv just realised the outer sleeve on the end of the linkage cable keeps popping off and the cable gathers and pops out. i have adjusted the linkage and still no real joy

sorry if this dont make sense.

to be honnest i bought it without driving it, as was bought as a project. the linkage before was coming from the passenger side and was 1 back and 5 up. which my 2 other bec's iv had was opposite so i put the linkage drivers side and made it 1up 5 down. yes i clutch cuming down the box 5/4/3/2 etc can select neutral easy aswell. car drives fine untill you wna drive it hard then just dont want to come down the box and sownds like its destroying the box (sownds like 1 minute its in then not the next) i must admit i do have the linkage cable bent on quite an angle, but like i said its fine when drive steady. could it be clutch? gearbox?

I would firstly check the push/pull cable for galling.

If you suspect its not working properly, inspect that as your first port of call.
