Any Volvo experts
A couple of months ago I picked up a 2001 Volvo C70 convertible 2.4t for next summer.
I put it on the road as a spare and so I could give it a regular run.
It's not been run for a few weeks as I found the hand brake shoe linings had delaminated and then I tore the tendons in my wrist.
I've just gone to start it to give it a run and its having none of it.
It cranks and fires then dies. If you give it some throttle it will yo yo.
There is no codes found with a basic obd2 reader and torque.
The dash is not displaying any rpm, coolant temp and Torque is showing no values for most sensors and actuators.
I have found the net so far to be very unhelpful with Volvo stuff in general. Ie take it to dealer and bend over.
I have checked all the fuses in the engine bay tried a different battery and cleaned the plug on the antenna ring. I am thinking it's an
immobiliser problem as I've seen a Vauxhall corsa do this when the owner lost the chip out of the key.
Any ideas please and any recommendations for a more dealer level of diagnostics.

I used to have a 855R,When I bought that none of the dash dials worked unless you turn the key back just a little. They suffer from ignition barrel
issues. Does the idling issue go after the car has be run for a couple of mins? The ecu needs to teach itself if not been run for a while I belive.

Does it show an immobilizer warning light ?
Just thinking if they go pearshaped they usually illuminate the immobilizer warning light ?
(Not too sure if it the same on a volvo though ?)

It's not running as such but if you get it to fire fast enough then as it dies it will re fire and yo yo

On that year I'd be looking at the throttle motor dying especially if it's never been replaced .

The chip went in my 06 Volvo, the engine would not not even crank so I doubt this is the issue.
Is the fuel pump playing up and cannot sustain pressure when running? as it has not gone into closed loop I would not expect a code.

I don't think it's the pump as other systems are down.

Key On Ignition Off you should be able to read all the sensors via OBD2
Just about everything on these is controlled by a central control module that is prone to water ingress, the cem has to be dealer level programmed
matched to individual vehicles and the programming is one shot is 2nd hand units can't be used.
However before going too far check that there is no major vacumm leak. Is the brake servo hose is connected?
A map sensor fault would also do something very similar.

I've got a S60 2.4t 'in stock' that I need to get rid off which has the dreaded etm problem where it will run fine and then all of a
sudden just start revving up and down and want to cut out all the time, something to do with the contacts in the motor on the electric throttle body,
seems to be a very common problem which is a shame as its a lovely car but just not worth spending much money on! If anyone wants a nice one that
needs a bit of work let me know!

Well it definitely looks to be an immobiliser problem.
I tried to start it this morning and the immobiliser led on the dash went nuts.
Obd2 is showing no faults, I was looking for recommendations of the Chinese knock off of Vida Dice.
So I am looking for some one that knows as much about Volvo's as I do fords ecu / immobilisers.

Can you recommend one ?
I've looked at a few and the response to most questions had been to bend for the soap at a local main stealer.

The instruments not working points to a CAN Bus coms issue.

I have the same engine in my v70 (same car, different body) I take it to my local garage as they have a superb diagnostics machine, could be worth
looking for an equally good garage or a Volvo specialist?

You'll need a mirror to see it but pull the inlet off the throttle body and see how grotty it is .ive done quite a few of these for traders
where they usually have hunting idle or cutting out due to a build up around the throttle as there isn't a separate idle control valve .if
it's no better after a clean try sticking a slim ie 2-3mm screwdriver in to hold it open ,if it runs its the etm

"It cranks and fires then dies. If you give it some throttle it will yo yo. "
Just a thought but if it was the immobilizer would it still start and fire and then "yo yo" under throttle ?
You'd think it just wouldn't start at all (cut the fuel pump & electrics etc ? )
Worked on a clio that did similar (although it would start) and it was the electronic throttle body in the end
No fault code shown and it needed live data to see it...

Yep it's the starting place for next week end. I think the Immobilizer was down to multi failed starts and pulling fuses an relays.
why the hell would Volvo code the throttle body to the ecu

Volvo went mad on car security hence the coded throttle body etc, I hope mine keeps plodding on.
Got in it two weeks ago, when I opened the drivers door the seat took itself back 3" first time it's done that in 2 years of
ownership!
