Painting engine - pointers please!
Thanks to everyone who chipped in about what the recommissioning of my Pinto should consist of

With that in mind - it should not be long before I am thinking about painting it (and the gearbox).
How's everyone else approached this? Is it as simple as a damn good clean / degrease - then applying (by brush preferrably) some engine enamel
paint (for engine) and Hammerite for the gearbox/bell housing?

After having my Pinto block and head chemically cleaned I applied Halford's red engine paint with a brush. I didn't paint gasket or
mating faces for fear of upsetting them. I chose not to paint my T9 gearbox as you couldn't really see it and TBH I couldn't be
bothered.

Must be clean and grease free. When I did mine, I used high temp engine paint. I gave the tin a good shaking and opened it to try a sample. I painted
a small area and left it to dry, but it took much longer than expected. I tried again only this time I stirred the paint very well and it dried much
quicker. This was with a brush but I think spraying would give better results.

Hammerite works well on engine blocks too, done a good few with no issues

It needs to be really clean and well de-greased
Hammerite is fine, I usually thin the first coat and then when applying the next coat/s apply them when the previous coat is nearly dry and still abit
tacky.
I've just used Granville Engine paint on the Pinto I'm rebuilding for a mate, but this is due to needing to match the original factory
colour on a Mk2 RS Escort restoration.
This covered well and seems to have left a good finish.
For gearboxes I usually use Hammerite aerosol
Like everything, Preparation is the key to a good finish....

Paint it black, colours just look a bit playskool, especially when they start using coloured pipes and hoses.

Black looks neat but light colours show any leaks better. I did mine silver in the por15 engine enamel. To use and in the finish it was no better than
smooth hammerite tho.

Engine and gearbox painted with POR15 in 2004, still as good as new, a bit dirty but no sign of the paint coming off. I used POR15 Cleaner Degreaser,
then use POR15 Metal Prep first.

Simoniz engine enamel is good stuff too, spray on and seems hard wearing.
I also used the VHT crackle stuff for cam covers as have a few others on here, if that's your bag - it's very tough, though you really
need to oven bake it.

Painted my engine black, looks rubbish and you can't see leaks. Brighter engines make everything easier.

Hammerite is the one
Halford high temp is water tinted with food dye!
