SVA Time
Ben_Copeland - 8/1/09 at 09:48 PM

Got my SVA booked for next friday at Gilllingham 8am. Got loads to do to get it 100%

Any one got a Mountney Steering wheel pad i can borrow ???

Need to put together a "SVA pack" any suggestions?

Dangle_kt - 8/1/09 at 10:06 PM

if that is your car in the avatar, will the air filter be ok? surely the dome of doom will catch on an edge or two there?

Ben_Copeland - 8/1/09 at 10:08 PM

Planning on sticking some rubber edging round it for "just in case". Dont know what else i can do

coozer - 8/1/09 at 10:19 PM

Take it off for the test!

Ben_Copeland - 8/1/09 at 10:27 PM

Can i do that then?

Just put a bit of mesh over the carb or something?

Are your indicators far enough out from the cone? Need to be a max of 400mm from the outside edge of the car (which may be the rear wheel arch if its wider at the back).

I would agree with Coozer and take it off but you will need something to make the hole look less hole like. A bit of mesh as you suggest and some edging strip perhaps? Need to watch the lack of filter wont throw your fuel settings and affect emissions.

Good luck

Got a friendly garage whos gonna check headlights, emissions, etc for me for a nominal fee.

I'll check the indicators, I need to make the tubes bigger diameter anyway.

Be aware that my examiner at Gillingham failed my steering wheel (non Sierra) as being a non type approved part.

I'd use the Sierra wheel and change when MAC in your hand.

Not going to expand on it as I've mentioned it in various threads over the years

id check the indicators and the filter...surely it would be alright with some rubber round the edges??

Ben_Copeland - 9/1/09 at 06:36 AM

Got no choice on that one.....

Sierra one wont fit.

If your talking years ago, i'm not worried cos the examiner is different now apparently

Good luck
Car looks pretty cool

marmot0 - 9/1/09 at 08:17 AM

Just had my SVA at Gillingham, tester was very fair and only took 2 hours to do the car. He let me adjust a few things on the day such as headlight adjustment. Failed on noise and emissions but nothing too serious. Retest on the 26th. All in all a fun day out. Good luck

Remove the air filter.I took mine off and used the
fine mesh from a frying pan splash guard
bought from wilko for a quid.it worked a treat and has been on ever since.

have you thought of exposing the dial and simply painting it and re-marking it or finding some speedo images in somwhere like the Demon tweeks or europa books and getting creative with a computer/scanner to enlarge / re-arange etc . you may obviously need some mates to help you mark the speedo where it should be using another car as a speed reference .

Or fit some oversize or undersize tyres for the test, all depends how far out it is

Good luck

Also watch the rear view mirror stalk for exposed edges , you can always wrap bits of water hose round with tie wraps if it's a bit sharp

Re the steering wheel , why won't the Sierra wheel fit ? if it makes it difficult to drive it's less of a problem than fitting a standard mountney check out my SVA picks for the glamorous steering wheel on mine

minor problem . can you shove the seat back or down to make it driveable ? remove your knees? remove carpet(if you have any) dont wear high heels .

Hi Ben
Just sent you an U2U about the steering wheel.

For future reference.
To anyone taking their car for SVA
you need a standard Sierra one as a sports one is not type approved.
And will attract a fail

Just found out the hard way

David

Not necessarily the case, it's a bit of a lottery. Mine passed at Mitcham with a Mountney wheel and centre pad on a standard Sierra column. Its worth talking to the engineers at your test centre to get there comments before the SVA day.

Ben_Copeland - 12/1/09 at 05:49 PM

Thanks David for the advice.....

I'm stuck then really cos i dont have a sierra steering wheel and i cant possible fit one as i wont beable to drive it even off the trailer

I'll just have to bribe him
