what is the story as fars as wheels/tyres and front mudguards goes?

I was under the impression that when looking from above, providing the mudguards cover the wheel, then that is SVA ok; as on the left below.

Have I misunderstood this? It seems the tyres must be within the body plan i.e. when looking from above, the mudguard covers the whole tyre - as on the right.

Which is correct?

i understand that the tyre is exempt - only needs to cover the wheel

The one on the left is the minimum length. The one on the right will also pass but it doesn't have to be that long.

Interestingly, I am thinking of fitting longer ones to improve the aerodynamics of the front of the car. my existing ones as per you left side diagram act like air scoops!

You can cut air slots into the back of the cycle wing to stop the air building up in there - Look at the Caterham CSR wings, and add some vents to the rear.

Those wings are crap! - The fibreglass has all splits and holes and the edges are not finished at all.
Who supplied them? - I want to avoid buying any like this!

left pic is correct, if not very borderline.
This si how my car was checked - tester spent a long time with spirit level to ensure OK as i was so close to the mark.
