Where to buy old-style memory?
David Jenkins - 4/4/12 at 06:12 PM

I have an elderly but fairly powerful Dell 450 PC - quad processor, so it really works well with Linux Mint. At the moment I have 2MB memory, but I'm tempted to take it to the max 4MB. It's PC2100 DDR, which is a bit old-style but still available.

So - can anyone recommend a good UK memory supplier who keeps a decent range at sensible prices?

My first proper PC was an ancient XT clone with 512kB and 5/14" floppy drives, but I upgraded to a 286 that had 1MB and a 20MB hard drive (but most DOS programs could only use 640k). The 286 was the first PC I owned that I could run Windows on (Windows 3.1 in standard mode).

Daddylonglegs - 4/4/12 at 07:35 PM

My first 'pute had 16KB!!

There's no rush... it would be grand if you happen to have 4 x 1GB sticks... or even 2 to get me started.

Pah!

StevenB - 4/4/12 at 09:06 PM

You could try crucial.com.

If you go for ebay make sure its 100 % compatible
low density ramm.

Bought HD stuff and it worked on one of our PCs
and not the other. Clashing with the old ramm apparently.

Someone might be along to explain more accurately.

And my first computer was a 48K Spectrum

It is a tie-break!! Me too. And I still have mine and think with its original box but knackered transformer!!!

Hated it when it took 15 mins to load a game from a cassette tape for it to stop working just before it had finished loading!!!

The good ol' days....

One thing I'll say is don't go too mad it's not really worth it - at work I can have a web browser (average 7 or 8 tabs open), two versions of AutoCad, Outlook Express and Photoshop all open at the same time and my RAM usage never gets close to the 4GB's installed. At home I've got a computer with 8GB and Windows 7 64bit and nothing I do ever gets close to needing anything near that amount of RAM - in fact I took 4GB out as an experiment and honestly couldn't tell any difference!

Mind you the work computer has 2 quad core cpus which probably helps - although they are horrible Xeon things.....

Macbeast - 5/4/12 at 07:58 AM

My first job was as a computer operator . IBM 1401 - 4K memory
IBM 7070 - 16 K.
Memory was little ferrite rings hand-threaded into a matrix.

McLannahan - 5/4/12 at 08:03 AM

I have some 1 x 1 Gig PC3200, 1 x 512mb PC2100, 2 x 512mb PC3200

I'll carry on looking. Are you using all your RAM slots now?

What model name is the PC?

D Beddows - 5/4/12 at 08:09 AM

I'd be interested in the 1GB PC3200 if it's DDR1 184 Pin non ECC stuff? that is of course if Mr Jenkins doesn't want it and/or you're looking to get rid? 2no. would be good if you have them?

That's the stick. Will carry on looking for more.

Have found some DDR2 and DDR3 but looking slim on DDR1 level

RichardK - 5/4/12 at 12:19 PM

I always used crucial

Cheers

Rich

D Beddows - 5/4/12 at 01:47 PM

Yeah, I'd be interested depending on what you want for it? (if you did find another that would be great!?)

Nothing against Crucial - but as the PC it would be going into is a bit of an experiment to see how little you can spend to build a PC that does everything 80% of computer users need...... in total it's cost me £25 so far plus some bits I had lying around I'm not going to spend twice that on RAM from Crucial in this instance

Dell Precision Workstation 450

It's old-hat in many respects, but it's more than quick enough for what I do (all sorts of stuff, but no gaming). It also has one important benefit to me - it cost me nothing (surplus from my old company) and I have a heap of spares from another identical machine in case something dies. As I said in my first post, I run Linux, which really can use memory efficiently and is generally quicker than most varieties of Windows - trouble is now and again I start to use swap space, which can slow processes down quite a bit as that has to use the disk.

It has 4 DDR slot, which are full of 512MB memory cards - if I can find 4 x 1GB then I'll replace the lot, as long as the price is right (i.e. cheap). If it would cost too much then I'd abandon the project!
