Where to buy small quantities of metal?
adrianreeve - 13/2/09 at 10:50 PM

Hi guys,

I need about 600mm of 1 3/4" or 45mm 16g ERW tube to build an inlet manifold, but I'm struggling to find anywhere that will sell small amounts for reasonable money. Anyone know of somewhere in Kent / London that may be able to help me?

Cheers

Adrian

you need metal supermarket.

They'll sell down to a few cm if you ask them. The 'problem' is they're expensive, but, its cheaper to buy a small expensive bit than a full piece.

I use metalsdirectuk.com for odd bits and pieces, give them a call and they will do most lengths and sizes.

Just go to a motor factors and buy a metre length of 45mm exhaust tubing.

I'm with that, a decent motorfactor will stock a selection of straight and curved bits of exhaust tube.

But before you even do that pop down to B&Q and have a wander about, its amazing what lurks made of tube, fancy shelving uprights and odd bits and bobs for kitchens.

I've just got a foot of 2-1/4" OD 6SWG wall MS tube from Metal Supermarket in Southampton - £19.55 inc VAT & delivery.

Not cheap I'll admit but quick, convenient and I don't have 5-1/2 metres of the stuff left over.

Use 4 of these;
bends
Gives you the 30 degrees you need and welds direct to a steel flange available from people on here such as shorttrack123

metal supermarket is a lot cheaper if you collect!

(although if you do full lengths and enough they'll deliver free of charge + be competitive on price. Well they where 10 years ago when i started the build).

try corus in the chatham dockyard sometimes they have offcuts the bloke will give you for beer money.

For a short bit like that I would go dumpster diving in the local steel workers skip......FOC I would use the 19 quid saved to get some beer
