Carbs or throttle bodies
bonzoronnie - 27/2/09 at 08:13 PM

Hi all.

After almost a year out from my build due to illness, I have finaly started work on my Roadster once again.

I have spent the last year contemplating which engine to fit.

I have decided to fit a 1.8 silvertop Zetec From a 1993 Escort. Low mileage and in good condition.
Came to me free, a real pitty not to use it.

I have some burning questions that I can't readily find the answers I am looking for.

If i wanted to go the megasquirt route. What version would be best suited ?

Bike carbs or throttle bodies ?

What type of either are most suited to the job ?

I quite fancy the throttle body route as I dont paticulary fancy rejetting carbs.

Recently I was offered a set of Honda CBR900 bodies complete with fuel rail & throttle position sensor.

Suitable or overkill for the job ?

Any advice would be most welcome.

if you going down the megasquirt route, then you need throttle bodies. IF you want to go down the carb route, then you would be better to use megajolt

The CBR900, should be fine for your engine. Megasquirt 1 with the spark code should be fine, you could go MS2 for the additional features, but you don't need to. I would go for a MS1 on the v3 board running the MSnS code. (extraefi is a good place to buy a ready built one)

if you want to go MS then you will need to get hold of some throttle boddies. i have just got mine up and running and now that its working its working well and its getting better everytime i keep tweeking.

Yes, megasqiurt is my prefered choice.
Have you any idea what version is most suited.

I am making the assumption that I can use the existing ignition system. ( TDC sensor. Coil pack & what looks to be an Edis4 unit )

Ronnie

The CBR900 bodies are really easy to respace, as they are cast in pairs. The port spacings work out really well for a zetec, and the big bonus is that the fuel rail is steel, so it can be cut in the middle and an extra section silver soldered in the middle. I'm just finishing my conversion using CB900 bodies, which are very similar. If you would like some piccies, I'll sort some out.

Think the latest version of megasquirt does both fueling and ignition, this will be confirmed by somebody that does actually have a clue about ms

have a look at extraefi.co.uk, there is loads of background informaion on the site as well as the Megasquirt manuals.you could also give phil ringwood a call or e-mail him,he really knows his stuff since he makes them, i believe there is usually a 3-4 week wait but i got mine in 10 days. tell him what set up your running and he will be able to tell you what the best set up to go with is. im running edis 4 on my pinto with R1 throttle boddies and im using the MS1 V3 board.

Thanks for that link.

My boys have offered to buy me a MS for my birthday.
Both petrol heads who are keen to get the Roadster running.
Be rude of me not to accept.

If you can use the existing ignition sysytem then you have a choice.

Either fit a set of carbs.

Or fit a set of throttle-bodies, megasquirt, lambda and swirl-pot etc.

I know which I'd go for, unless money is truly no object

Bike carbs work really well and are fairly easy to re-jet and set up.

That's what I have at the moment, but ultimately I think I'll go efi, although I'll probably use the carbs I have as throttle bodies, combined with a modified Zetec manifold, fuel rail and injectors when I do.
