Tuning to pass MOT ! (emerald ecu)
DM - 15/8/09 at 01:33 PM

Greetings all

Tiger failed its MOT last week - all good except emissions which were 5 times over its limit!

so...

I have very limited knowledge of this subject but presumably this means Im running way too rich? For the purposes of getting through this MOT I need to get it ideling nice and cleanly - any advice on how to achieve this please?

is this simply a matter reducing the injector opening times on the 1k rpm site? Currently set to 2.4mS

Or should I be looking at some other setting?

totally out of my depth here so any help appreciated!!

Many thanks

Dan

What engine are you running, and what were the results from the test - did you get a printout? Without knowing a bit more, I doubt anyone can help!

It is a Duratec 2.0l running Suzuki TBs with an Emerald ECU.

Have you got Dave Walkers book on engine management? Do you have a lambda boss in the exhaust with a sensor fitted. The Emerald ECU has a built in air/fuel ratio meter which is dead easy to use , the book has all the information you need. Where about's are you ? Someone in your area may be able to help ?

thanks for the comments so far... Dave's book would no doubt be a useful investment.

Sadly dont have a lambda sensor on my car but might be able to arrange use of one (cheers Jeff!)

Got some further info from the MOT station, the problem is the CO level: 2.88 % on my previous MOT but now reading 13%

No idea why this has changed so much, ECU hadnt been touched, not sure what esle could affect it?

I've reduced the injector open times for idling speeds and the car still seems to tickover ok. Will take it back on Monday to see if that has made any difference. Anything else I could try??

ps - am in south London in case anyone near by could help

Thanks!

IIRC the Emerald is an Alpha-N system, i.e. it only uses the the throttle position sensor for engine load sensing. If the TPS has moved even slightly, then it would cause the mixture to change quite a lot at idle.

correct, its only using TPS

With the laptop connected and watching it run it seems to be sitting at load site 0, maybe it was higher before...

You should be able to display the coolant temperature on the laptop , Doe's it read the same as the cars temperature gauge or thereabouts? If giving a lower reading it could well be the coolant temperature sensor playing up (Fairly common problem)

good news - it passed

Took the car back for a retest yesterday and the emssions readings were fine. I'd lowered the value in the injection table at 1k and made sure the engine was nice and hot by the time I got to the garage (I suspect it was too cold when they did the first test and enriching too much).

delighted to be picking up my pass cert later today - thanks for the comments on here

ps,

really ought to get it booked in with Dave anyway!
