I've just had a tank made, and have modified an MX5 in-tank Injection fuel pump assembly to fit in a vertical fashion using an uprated pump dipping into a pot in the bottom of the tank. All seems good, quite happy with how it will work etc .. However, I have a question ..

The return pipe into the tank has a Fuel Pressure Regulator on it, also in the tank. I believe it's around 34psi rating. I'm not certain I want this in the tank, so does anyone see an issue with me using an after-market regulator off the end of the fuel rail? .. with the return being simply an "open return" with no restriction?

No that should be OK it is how most systems are set up , it will be better than having both supply and return lines running at full system pressure.
Is that a bit of neoprene pipe insulation wrapped around the pump or is it OE fitment ?

The foam was supplied with the pump. As it is sold as an in-tank pump I'm presuming it will be OK in fuel .. However, you mentioning it means I'll be trimming a bit off to dunk in fuel to see if it stays in one piece ..
