More megasquirt help needed

Evening all,

Once again i need the help of the mighty lcb'ers

I have built and installed my ms1 v3 and have the engine running nicely in the garage
but i have an issue with the air and coolant gauges in megatune.
At first start from cold both gauges read -30 degrees c and with the engine at normal
operating temperature the coolant reads 30 degrees and the air temp reads -13 degrees.
I have had a day off work today and went in the garage to try and sort it.
Try as i might i havent been able to do a blooming thing with it

If i could get it off warm up enrichments i think i might start to make progress
but try as i might,it is defying my efforts.

Can any of you ms experts tell what i am doing wrong please????

Sounds to me like you have non-standard temperature sensors, or a different bias resistor than the MS is expecting.

EasyTherm is the solution, which allows you to change the calibration curves in the MS.

Yup, non-standard sensor curves there, you can try to tweak it with easytherm. If it's too far off (some of our bike engine ones are) you may need to alter the bias resistor for them.

The best bet would be to swap the sensors or the bias resistors to suit the sensors that are fitted.I used a Bosch coolant sensor and a slightly different bias resistor for the water and a sensor from RS that matched the mega squirt standard one.
I think the coolant one was from a vauxhall, and the air temp may also be suitable .It is really only the air temp that is critical as it affects the fuelling, water temp is just used for cold start and warm up enrichments.
The other option if you are using ford sensors is to change the bias resistors to 27k items .

If you swap the bias resistor you still need to easytherm it as the curve won't have the same errr curve as for the squirt sensor.

Use Tuner studio software downloadable and free and input the resistance values of the sensors, Tuner Studio is better than Megatune as it is supported and Megatune isnt.

You put your sensors in the fridge measure the temp and resitance of the sensors, put them under your armpit and do the same, and then place over boiling water in the steam and measure again, put both sets of figures into the software.

Providing three temperatures and three resistance readings allows the software to plot a temperature/ resistance profile of your sensors.

Thanks for the replies gents, what exactly is easy therm and where
can i get it?

I have found an air temp sensor on the bay that is the correct resistance for ms.
Is this worth a go do we think???Its only 12 bar.

Ok, i have just orderd the correct ms air temp sensor from
eblag.Just need to sort out a coolant sensor now.

Hi Andy,

If you are using Standard Ford sensors you need to replace R4 and R7 with 27kohm, if you are using megasquirt (GM) sensors you need 2.49Kohm resistors (these are fitted as standard as part of the MS build)

There is no point in attempting to get the engine running right until the air and water sensors are reading correctly as the fuelling will be all over the shop! If you run the engine too rich you can damage it, engine damage can happen with AFR <11 low load.

I have bought a megasquirt air temp sensor that reads within a few degrees of ambient in the garage.
I will sort a gm sensor on monday,i believe the vauxhall vectra item is suitable.
