Megasquirt ignition wiring options for duratec?

I'm just starting on my wiring loom for the megasquirt on my duratec install.

The injector wiring and sensor wiring etc all seems pretty straight forward.

However, I need to decide on the best approach for the ignition.

My engine came with the single wasted spark coil pack, so do I stick with that?

Do I use my EDIS module that I had installed on my pinto, or ditch it and let the MS drive the coil pack directly?

Or are there other options I should consider? 4 coils etc.

I haven't assembled my MS yet. I thought it best to decide on the above first so I can make the necessary changes to the build.

I run wasted spark (but not on a duratec)


Wasted spark doesn't seem to have any practical disadvantages compared to COP (perhaps less RF interference), so I'd stick with wasted spark. COP has more failure modes.

The benefits of EDIS (as I see it) are, robust, failsafe (i.e. 10deg limp home), simple.
The benefits of letting the MS control it are, better spark control (i.e. spark cut for rev limiting, or other trickery), more manly.


You should check that EDIS can handle all the RPM that a duratec can, I think it can, but I know for bike engines that the EDIS would be found wanting.

ditch the edis and make some money from it and run the spark off the bip373's in the ms. as standard you only have one bip 373 on the board so you will have to add the second

I did buy and extra bip373 when I bought the MS, so yes I can do it that way.

I'm just after the pros and cons of the different ways.

I started off using the EDIS module on my zetec because of aforementioned reliability/simplicity but actually found it to be unpredictable, especially getting it to Trigger the MS. It's the last thing you need when you're trying to get a new engine fired up with a freshly built ECU! Eventually ended up fitting additional BIP373 and it worked like a charm.

I moved away from edis because you cant have a spark cut rev limiter. It just goes to 10deg when it get no signal

Built my MS that way and my Duratec is fine. I didn't want a 30 year+ component in my ignition system - couldn't see the point.
