Hi,

I am transplanting an EFi engine into my classic. It originally had fuel pumped by a mechanical pump on the engine block, which I upgraded to a FuelFlow 015, for the carbs and it worked very well.

The move to EFi has seen me use a Bosch 0580254033 Pump from a Mk2 Golf, with its integral swirlpot, as I didn’t want the hassle of building a high pressure pump into the original fuel tank. The setup is all in and seems to work, but I have yet to run the engine in anger.

The engine has a Specialist Components kit with BMW K100 twin cam head on a British Leyland A+ Block. It’s a 8 valve head and should produce around 115bhp, so no barnstormer.

My question to all you knowledgeable chaps is, will the swirlpot run dry? The lift pump is rated at 90 litres per hour (LPH) and the high pressure pump is rated at 120 LPH.

All advice gratefully received.

Assuming the excess from the fuel rail returns to the swirl pot, then no, it won't run dry as the engine won't consume more than the LP pump can provide.

Just out of interest how did you find the sc components kit, I'm just about to start plugging the block and re-drilling for a 16v conversion for the Mrs classic mini.

As above lp pump fills the swirl pot, up pump goes to inlet on injector rail, injector rail the has regulator to keep the pressure around 3 bar (iirc), return from injector rail goes back to swirl pot and then swirl pop top connection goes back to fuel tank.

Thanks guys, that’s a relief. I kinda hoped that the fuel return would be adequate, but it’s good to hear that.

Yes the engine went together well, the SC kit is good, I had to modify some parts to suit an inline fitting, as they are all for transverse Minis.

I did struggle to find suitable plugs for the various holes in the block, they had to be made of some good quality material and lock into the surface of the block, so I ended up tapping the holes in the block and used high tensile steel wheel studs from our local scrappy. Loctiting the studs in before trimming off the excess bolt with a disk cutter. I then sent the block off to be over bored 20 thou, and the block skimmed 10 thou and the whole thing acid dipped to clean out the oil and waterways.

The engine was run on a test bed before fitting, so I was able to put about 10 hours on it.

Fir Flickr you need to copy the bbcode link not the share link. Chose a 640x480 size otherwise it will be too big fir the forum.

If you are using the pc/web version, go to photo you want. Bottom right hand corner are four icons, you want the second from the left (right facing arrow), click on that brings up a dialogue box, top right say “bbcode”, click on that, choose the picture size from the drop down menu, copy the text and past in here.

If you are using the Flickr studio app then this option is not there for some strange reason.

Hmm I’m on my iPad.

You need to go into Flickr via safari and follow directions above.

Unfortunately the Login process through Safari, just launches the Flickr App.

I had that, I think if you log out of the app and then go to safari and try and log in there it seems to work and if you go to the ap it stays logged in. I think that is how I solved it but not sure.

Did it, had to log out of Yahoo as well.
