I'm well into the installation of my Megajolt, and have just completed the VR sensor - EDIS - coil bits (the original scrap Ford parts).

I thought I'd try to run the engine before connecting the MJ unit, using the EDIS 'limp-home' mode - all I got a bit of a cough, then a backfire through the carb at the next attempt. It's good news that at least it was trying to fire, but obviously I've got something wrong somewhere. So, can I clarify a few points before I try again?

1.First of all, should I be able to run on EDIS alone? I was expecting to get the 10 degrees BTDC limp-home fixed setting.

2. I connected the plug leads according to the markings on the coil - do I have to change anything due to the crossflow's odd firing order (1-2-4-3)? I don't think I do, but I have to ask.

3. When you look straight at the front of the engine, the timing mark on the block is at roughly 1 o'clock. If I set the crank to TDC so the pulley mark is against the zero timing mark, the gap in my toothed wheel is at roughly 10 o'clock. Have I got this right?

It's not running for long enough to put a timing light on it.

I thought the missing tooth was supposed to be 90 degrees before TDC ??

I'll try to find something to either prove myself wrong or confirm.

I think you will have a problem starting it on the EDIS -10 deg as the engine will be cold and not getting enough fuel to warm up.

My zetec runs with just the edis so theres no reason why yours wont run with it.

Went back and re-read that thread, and realised that I'd counted 9 teeth in the wrong direction - I think I was trying to start with about 100 degrees advance!

It now runs very nicely, and the timing is near-enough exactly 10 degrees BTDC. I'll set it spot-on later.

I can now move forward to the MJ installation and wire-up knowing that the second-hand bits work OK.
