How much dwell is needed.

I have a vems unit and can set the dwel to whatever I need ( measured in Mili Seconds ) whats the recomended way to work out how much I need.

Rover v8 running waisted spark from a later 4.6 engine.

PS had the engine running from the ECU this Eve and all seemed ok but dont want to start blowing the coil packs up as they arnt cheep.
