EDIS-4/ Coil pack on Zetec, Wiring help???!
Krismc - 7/6/07 at 07:02 PM

Im trying to start my car for the first time and i would like some info on EDIS-4 and Coil Pack for a 2.0 Zetec, if anyone can help out???

Problem/fault is....

When i turn to ignition and then crank i get one spark from each cylinder then i get nothing, although i continue to get injectors firing and cranking etc

On further inspection i seem to have 12 volts on all 3 coil wires (with coil pack disconnected) when key is just turned to ignition (ie not cranking)

This cant be right surely, i thought these should have noting on them and should pulse from the ECU??

ECU is a mega squirt but even with this connected i still get 12volts on all three wires?

is this possibly a faulty EDIS-4

no for a MCU its allot easyer to connect a perhipial to ground than to 12volts.

Sow the Coils are always powered and are grounded by the MCU.

in this case the MCU is EDIS4 unit.

Tks

Sow the 12volts enter the coils and then get to the EDIS4 the EDIS4 needs a very good ground. When needed it wil ground the coil.
for a short time (dwell time) (generating the spark this way).

Are you sure you have the VR sensor connected the right way around?

Sorry i dont understand that!! MCU??

I think so but can anyone confirm the colour/connections of the VR and where they should connect too??

quote:
With Pip and Saw disconnected it should run at 10 degrees fixed and stable, if not swap the VR polarity, if not double check grounds and feeds are in good condition
Might be worth taking anything else off that could prevent this from happening and get this bit right first then play with a brain..

12v Feed is, ignition live and earths are ok and ring out ohms.

If i disconnect the Megasquirt then it still happens, so all that is connected is the edis, the sensors are all fed through the mega squirt, not sure what you ment about 10degrees etc...can you explain more.

MCU = Motor Control Unit = Mega squirt (in this case EDIS 4 unit).

the EDIS unit has a limb home mode.
the setting is 10degrees advance.

sow to check the basic working principles you disconnect it the pip and saw line.

Then it enters limb home mode ==> 10 degrees advance. (if you have it setted up correctly)

still confused??

Krismc - 8/6/07 at 09:11 PM

And also let me get this right, IDM(pin 2) AND CTO(pin 11) and pin 4 on the EDIS are not connected to anything???

scottc - 20/6/07 at 12:08 PM

Kris,

IDM is the Ignition Diagnostic Monitor, which you can use for Tach

CTO is Clean Tacho Output

Pin 4 is apparently Signal Return Ground ?!?!

Have a look at the top part of this pic, for an EDIS 6

Basically what TKS is saying is that if you remove your Megasquirt unit. (or disconnect pip/saw)

EDIS will default to sparking at 10 degrees BTDC.

So take the megasquirt out of the equation, crank the engine and see how many sparks you get? Have you got a timing light?

I'll bring mine round if you like.

ah right yea,

that would be cool mate, when you thinking??? sat? sun??

scottc - 21/6/07 at 04:34 PM

Eithers good mate. But going to a BBQ Sat evening so I might be no use Sunday.

scottc - 21/6/07 at 04:35 PM

Actually I've just ordered an EDIS kit.

Hopefully it should be here by Saturday. If so I'll bring it with me.

cheers to scott he turned up fri evening at 4ish and 20 mins later we started the car, the EDIS diagram that sumone from here sent me was wrong, and the edis wiring that scott had worked....woo hoo at least its started now!!

scottc - 23/6/07 at 10:00 AM

Is that it? One sentence in a week old thread no one will read again!

Krismc - 23/6/07 at 07:13 PM

When its running ill give you credit, until then its just a cheers
