Fuel pump wont stop
Findlay234 - 15/10/07 at 09:49 PM

Got a 4age 16v bluetop. Had the engine running on saturday fine, just a timing issue present. now it seems that when you turn the ignition the fuel pump wont turn off after priming the system. Any ideas?

Im using standard efi and ignition system, standard pump as well. checked the relays and they seem to work fine, checked the circuit open relay and it seems to be fine too. what could be the problem....

Recirculation from the regulator return line ?

mine bike pump did this, turned out to be a load of swarf got from the tank into the internals of the pump and grinded everything up nice and so didn't regulate (still pumped). Lesson was learnt and a new filter and new pump were installed.

fuel is recirculation through the return line and im pretty sure it cant be a case of swarf in the motor because there wasnt any in the tank, i made sure to check this, and the pump has its own particulate filter at the bottom of the fill line. I will go and check the pump today though.

if its just coming back through the return it will just keep pumping, you need a pressure regulator to hold the pressure (on the return pipe)

Yep its got a pressure regulator.

coincidentally ive just come on to mention that the pressure regulator seemed to be making a lot of noise while the pump was working so i replaced it for another one i have and its still the same noise and wont stop pumping. The pressure regulator is connected to the inlet manifold via vacuum tube

you have got supply correct way round? strange that they both make an odd noise

Findlay234 - 16/10/07 at 10:33 PM

yep def got the supply the right way round. As it goes now, turn the ignition on and the pump starts up along with the noisy regulator. Touching the fuel pipes you can feel that the feed line has a good solid flow while the return line has a lot more turbulence in it, possibly created by bubbles???

SORTED!!!!!!!!!!!

think it was a vacuum tube.....

It should be on the fuel rail before the return.

Yeah the regulator and return are the same thing. Engine runs fine now. just a loping idle which probably has something again to do with dodgy vacuum tubing. well its is 20 year old rubber.
