Injection Fuel Pump With SU Carb?
smart1275gt - 12/4/08 at 08:07 PM

Hi All,
I'm thinking of using the original in tank fuel pump in conjuction with my old SU carb. I know most injection fuel pumps push 50+psi, but can I run it with a regulator?

If not, a solid state Facet pump sucking through the dormant F/I pump? Will it work?

Cheers.

The SU's only need 2 or 3 psi so there would be a lot of rgulating to do, there should be a returm so should be possible.

I think sucking through the existing pump would put too much strain on a low pressure pump.

The right thing to do is to do away with the in tank pump, or strip it and take all the valves out so as to make it non restrictive, then fit a solid state low pressure pump.

You might find a carb bike with an in tank pump you could mod...

Cheers Pete, some good advice there. Probably run a new pipe from the tank to a filter and low pressure pump and strip out the guts of the existing pump.

For SU carbs use a fuel pump from a bike with carbs IE zx9r
Have a look in my photos at SU carbs

SU needs 3 psi.

I reckon it will be fine with a regulator.

the fact that is is capable of much more pressure doesn't make much difference to it's operation.

pressure only exists if there is resistance.

think of it this way.

take a small drainpipe and blow into it. with the end open there is little pressure but block up the end, you get more pressure and it is more effort to blow.

i reckon the same princple will appply to the pump - let's wait for the hydraulix experts to say otherwise.

imagine you are the pump and you

Very much doubt if a regulator would drop the pressure from 50 PSI to 3 psi Injection regulator would only regulate to 2 or 3 bar and a filter king probably isn't built to cope with 50PSI . Do the job properly, do away with the in tank pump and fit a low pressure pump .

Think RustyNuts is right - 50 psi is going to hurt the reg...
