Tuning with a LM1
triumphdave - 28/4/08 at 09:04 PM

Hi Guys,
Engine is just about sorted Know (i think),so my mind is know on tuning.I have a LM1 air fuel ratio thingy so want to have a go at setting up my R1 carbs. What I need is a general idea of where to start in relation to ratios.I have done a bit of research and so far come up with WOT 12.5:1-13.0:1,and cruising 13.5:1-15.0:1
How do these figures sound?I think I have sort of got the wrong end of the stick,as I thought I was meant to be aiming at 14.7:1.

You don't actually want to run @ 14.7:1 (stoch) all the time (even if that's supposidly the most efficient combustion ratio). When you're on a trailing throttle off load you can run quite lean but when you're revving the nuts of the engine it's a good idea to give it a bit extra fuel to cool it down a bit......

The 14.7/1 ratio is to keep catalytic converters happy, running leaner off load is more efficent but produces more nitrous oxide emissions hence the check for Lambda at MOT. 12.5 gives best power and helps to prevent any chance of pre ignition etc when under full load.
