Upgrading megasquirt
Benzine - 7/8/08 at 01:32 PM

I've got Megasquirt 2 V3.0 but it looks like I need new drivers as it won't run 6 coil-on packs (as the volvo engine has) Is that the best option? or is there an alternative? (run EDIS with it?) idk

well I am no expert but the software should be changeable to handle any number of cylinders within reason, so 5 should not be a big problem.

As for drivers, surely an add on driver board for the coil(s) could be made as there surely has to be spare i/o to drive the coil(s).

Have you asked on MS forum?

.... like I said, I am not expert on MS.

I've not asked on a MS forum yet, could try that

It's a straight six btw, not a 5 cylinder

doesn't that make it easier , if wasted spark?

How many cyls was it firing before??
If 4 and now 6 do you have 3 vb921's on the board or only 2?? You'll need 3 for a six cyl and you will need to change some of the software settings as well.

The biggest problem is...........it's not running yet ! The MS is a `standard` V3 , so it has the normal number of coil drivers .
Is there an `easy` route to getting it sorted ? I have no experience of `coil on plug` setups , is there any advantage of this over Edis ? I understand the ECU will have to be modded either way ?

EDIS6 would be simplest if it were not for the fact you will have a 60-2 trigger wheel (the flywheel) and EDIS needs 36-1. You'll need at least 3 VB921 coil drivers (you could use 6 if you want to get really complicated!) which means you'll need to run MSnS-E (also known as MSExtra) software rather than standard Megasquirt. This is no bad thing as MSnS-E has loads of cool features you'll enjoy playing with once you got it all tuned (traction control, flat shift, etc, etc)!.

MSExtra/2 is now available for megasquirt 2 hardware so that's what you're after.

I've gone with EDIS6 (just ordered) with a trigger wheel. Seems like the least complex option
