My dear dad gave me a 500 euro note yesterday as we are off on holiday soon. He had taken it from somebody as rent on a flat, and being generous
thought he would help us out with it.
turns out we have got a bite of a white elephant. nobody over here wants to change it either into smaller euro notes, or even into Stirling. And
don't even get me onto trying to phone a bank these days
As to using it in Europe, advice seems to be "fat chance" unless you are in Germany, Austria or Holland. And then only banks in major
cities.
so chaps, anybody got a bright idea? (besides making it into a paper aeroplane/using it to light a fire etc)
Cheers
Clive
use it to pay for your hotel, or use it at the airport if you are flying?
surely any high street bank will change it?
At least take it with you and give it a go?

Holiday is a package, all paid for.
Popped into Barclays, and after the initial sucking of teeth, they can change it to sterling, takes 4 weeks to appear in my account
All a PITA to be honest. I shall pass the message to my dear (generous) dad and advise him not to accept them again.
Just have a google about them. Seems the issue is that they are never used except by criminal gangs. well, that is the headlines. That nice Simon
bloke who does the travel stuff says they are hopeless.
Anyway, one less thing think about. We usually take whatever change we have left over from previous trips plus the Clarity card (ie no loading to get
money out of the ATM's. Again, Simons advice....and MSE)
So reading between the lines your dad has rented his flat out to a Eurpean Criminal..
...... issue is that they are never used except by criminal gangs
I think you dad had beter take some backup nest time he collects the rent

4 weeks? What are they doing, transferring it atom by atom?
I use them quite regularly in Europe when I go on buying trips for antiques, I go into a UK exchange place with a huge stack of £20 notes and come out with a very small pile of big Euro notes, I love them! Saves having bunging pockets of cash when you need to spend a decent amount of money. Hotels, banks etc all take them....

There's no probelm with 500 euro notes, it's only small shops and filling stations that won't accept them abroad.
In the uk, i've paid them into my bank/account, all ok.

Depends on the country, in Italy even 50 & 100 euro notes can be difficult to spend.
like that old film, the million pound note
I have some considerable experience with these having been paid by a German client with them a couple of times. If you take it into the bank you have
your account with they should be able to convert to sterling & pay it into your account, they wil not however change it over the counter.
Using it abroad you certainly won't get any small shop to accept it, nor most filling stations & I doubt you'd get an overseas bank to
change it. Anyone who has a Euros account can pay it in for you & draw it out as smaller denomination notes.
They are not legal tender in the UK in any normal way
