HMRC fake tax refund email
nick205 - 10/11/16 at 03:47 PM

I received an email purporting to be from HMRC saying I was due a tax refund - with a "click here" link in it.

I wasn't expecting any refund and as far as I'm aware am not due one either.

Googling shows the email to be fake and that HMRC only ever contact you by post about such things. I've forwarded it to the HMRC phishing email address and deleted it.

Thought it might be worth highlighting to others to encourage people not to get caught by it.

A lot of fake Amazon and Paypal emails doing the rounds this week.
Never ever click -- if unsure type the address in or go to the site through Googling.

Indeed - always be careful!

If they're that much in need of you they'll try again.

I think a number of similar threads come up if you search this very forum for 'tax refund email' - Nick, you even feature on one of them!

yep never click, my wife did one for something that she doesn't even have an account for. Fixing it burnt about 6 hrs that I could have been doing other things

Had a PayPal one this week, reported it to PayPal who confirmed it as fake.

Posted warnings on several forums except this one which doesn't accept my new postings.

Am I the only one who rolls the mouse over the "link" to check it- usually some hacked shitty website who need better security with some dodgy php on the end.

HMRC, paypal etc don't sub out their web hosting to www.designer-clothes.com or some BS like that.

At least the spambots could have the dignity to spoof a java rollover....

Yep, got the same message Nick, deleted it immediately.

I often questioned HMRC's policy to only respond to phone or letter, given modern day technologies. But after this sort of thing it starts to make sense.

Response email back from HMRC "phishing" this morning thanking me for sending them the email and confirming it's a scam.

Funnily enough another scam email from LinkedIn this morning asking me the "click here" and "verify" some security details. DELETED.
