Megasquirt – to use EDIS or not
I originally ordered up my Megasquirt kit with extra coil drivers so I could drive the coils directly, but with my build dragging on and on I’m now
beginning to wonder if using EDIS would be a simpler solution. Certainly after looking at the changes needed to the standard Megasquirt to drive the
coils directly EDIS does seem simpler.
To give you some background, the Megasquirt has been partially assembled but none of the modifications needed for direct coil driving have been made
and hopefully when its finished it will be running the Zetec engine in the MK.
So my question is, is it worth persevering with direct coil drive or scrapping that idea and switching to using an EDIS module.

The Edis gives a nice safety net of Limp home mode for Ignition, that's why I used it.
ATB Dan.
The less I worked, the more i liked it.

I can help with this one :-)
I went through exactly the same process, started with coil drivers, then found the set up a real nightmare - you have to play around in software with
dwell times, etc, etc...Also managed to burn them out quickly.
EDIS is tried and tested, very reliable, no set up required, nice and neat....Just make sure the interal mods to MS are the correct ones.....
Best of luck...

Another vote for EDIS, if it's getting a crank signal, it'll always get you home. Why do a load of mods to make things less reliable...?

glad someone asked this as i was wondering the same thing. i have megajolt on atm but will be changing to t/b's soon so think it will be easier
to keep the edis as its already wired in.
also where can i get a decent megasquirt ecu for decent money?

I originally had MJLJ and converted to Megasquirt and kept the EDIS.
I also kept all my MJ loom so the Megasquirt loom was much easier and quicker to make.
EDIS is pretty bullet proof and I would use it again.
The only issue is that you can't have an ignition cut as a limiter but if you retard the spark to 0 as per MJ then this works perfectly.

Well you seem to have confirmed what I was begining to think.

Well it seems to be a running theme of my build to overcomplicate things as much as possible
But in an effort to finally finish im begining to junk most of these idea

Well I built my own system with the drivers for the coil and it was not troublesome. It works well. Have never touched the dwell angle or any of
that stuff and the car drives beautifully.

If your running normally aspirated go with the edis because of the above reasons(limp home etc). But when I used it with about 17psi boost it just
carried on revving with the ignition backed to 0. Messing about with direct drivers now.

With edis you could implement a hard cut in the same way as megajolt does it by switching a resistor across the coil windings.I am using both systems
at present but with the megajolt providing ignition , rev limiter and shift lights and the tacho signal to the megasquirt for just the fuel , but
intend to change to megasquirt and edis only over the winter.
