Temp Sender Location

I'm looking at where to fit the coolant temp sensor atm, is it better in the top or bottom hoses to the rad?

It makes sense to me to use the top, but wanted to check?

Cheers

Standard position on the engine side of the thermostat.
2nd choice in the by-pass circuit close to outlet from the head.
3rd choice top hose
