Megasquirt install on 1998 C1 ZX9-r engine

Hi guys, I have been installing an MS2 v3.0 on my 1998 C1 kawasaki ZX9-r engine and have now got it running with megasquirt controlling injection and fuel.

I'm using:
2008 ZX10-r throttle bodies with 440cc injectors
ZX6-r throttle body inlet rubbers
Z1000 24-2 crank trigger wheel
Gen 1 ford coilpack
Bosch 044 fuel pump
Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator

Once it was all wired in, getting all of the settings correct in tunerstudio........ it ran!

It was initially trying to start for a second and then die, this meant that the cranking settings were correct but the settings in the VE table were off, I added 10 to the idle range of the fuel table and it idled great.

Next is to get the plenum on, turbo manifold on and intercooler/piping. Then it should be ready for a trip to BaileyPerformance.... will have to give it a wash beforehand.

Congrats, well done. I was hoping to be at that stage with my blade engine, but struggling with time! Keep us posted.

Any reason you didn't use the original coil sticks? I thought Megasquirt supported them.

Because the ZX9 uses CDI ignition, from my reading about megasquirt, CDI coils don't work with megasquirt, they would have to be changed to hays has ones that I hi I are logic level or some other stick from a bike with an ECU.

Also since ford coilpacks are widely used with megasquirt, the dwell and other characteristics are all figured out so I didn't have to do the testing of dwell settings if I used other coils

Dave,

Glad to hear you have it running!

Do you know roughly when you would like it set up? - planning workload at the moment and i know you will be itching to get it out on the track ASAP!!

Cheers Dale.

I have university exams at the end if this month, also got my brothers wedding mid may.

Work that still needs to be done is:

Weld turbo manifold to laser cut plate bolting to the head
Weld pipe in sump for turbo drain
Piping from turbo through intercooler to plenum.

That's about it, my thoughts on time would be somewhere around the end of may/in june time. I don't actually race it competitively at the moment and will have to wait for fields to become available, but want to be out when the stubble fields are open.

One question Dale, since I am running the MS2 extra code, do you tune in tunerstudio? I have seen in your videos that you use Megatune, I would like to keep the extra code for the 16x16 table tuning and other updates that are coming out for it.

Hi Dave,
Yes we use tunerstudio, I must update my website as all the vids are afew years old now. Don't be too quick to update your code as new versions come out, for your car I would use ms extra 2.1.1. After it is mapped you must stick with the code used during the mapping. Later code versions do have more options/features but you have a basic setup(batch injection, wasted spark)

I would advise you wire your tps in screened lead, same sort of stuff you would have used for the crank sensor. Return all sensor grounds to the megasquirt, then the main grounds to the engine block or chassis.

Let me know nearer the time and I'm sure we will fit you in.
