Hi guys,

What low cost systems have you used etc that reads fault codes on a Blacktop and also shows live dat, engine speed, coolant temp etc.
Bluetooth too if possible but not a must have.

Cheers!

If you have a eec-v ecu from a mondeo/cougar it is not obd compliant even though it uses a standard obd-ii connector, iirc 02-04 focus ecu's are obd compliant and should work with a generic obd code reader.

If the device you have is based on an elm327 chipset, then you can get Forscan working with it on a laptop, it may also be available on android.
The obd compliance doesn't matter with Forscan as the chipset supports the j1850 pwm protocol that the ford ecu's use.

Hi ya,

The device i purchased is BT and mentions "Better than Generic ELM327 ELM 327 V1." How would I get forscan working or is there a better device etc?

Many thanks!!

Have a look at their website

https://forscan.org/

The basic functionality is free, more complex functions are a licenced addon.

If you post the 4 letter code on the label of your ecu, it may help to id its origin and compatibility.

Hi ya,

The name of the ecu is "LAAN" which seems to come out at a 96 - 200 mondeo?

One device on the forscan is mentioned as "VLINKER" by VGATE. The unit i purchased is VGATE supped too so might work?

Firstly test it on a know car. Your tintop, the wife’s, neighbours. Anything.

That will tell you if it’s your dongle or your wiring.

Hi ya,

I tried it on my daily car and working fine. Wiring checks out so could be as said, the age of ecu isn't fully OBD compliant. I have ordered another thats linked on the Forscan sight "VLINKER FD"
Forscan said it couldn't see the ecu either but will see what the next dingle does. If not, has to be ECU down which would be mega pants lol

Hoping its not knackered as they are rare to find now etc.
The other dongle will be here tomorrow so will find out. I guess a simple check is to fit the pats LED to see if it working correctly.
At least I know if ecu is powring up.

Hi ya,

It was the reader, the new one connects so it appears early ones can have an issue.

I have some fault codes and none I expected.
I guess because I haven't run the engine yet, the disconnected MAF and Lambda sensor are not showing errors?
The errors i have the following.

P1000 OBDII Monitor Testing Not Complete. Because engine not run?

P0230 because fuel pump relay is out?

B1600 because not used the PATS key etc?
