Megasquirt- buying components direct

Has anybody done this?

I'm being a bit lazy as I don't really want to bother getting a quote for the entire components list from CPS/Farnell/RS/Maplin/whoever!

I just want to know if there's any price benefit of sourcing the rest of the board's components myself.

I'm pretty sure it's probably no cheaper than getting a whole kit as Bill Shurvinton etc. are able to get a bulk discount.

But just in case!

Cheers,
James

Its worth a try...

Have a look at the rapidelectronics website...they have a smaller stock than RS, but they let you buy single items...good service as well!

Aprreciate that Mark!

I don't think anyone would expect you to build all those kits just 'as a favour'.

If I was a sensible person I would buy a ready built from you!
Instead, I'm a masochist with (apparently) too much time on his hands!

Trust me you would be surprised, how many times I have been told to "f*ck off" by site users after being asked how much a built unit is.....

I promice not to tell you to f*ck off but could you give me a price for a MS to run a rover V8 and two ford 4 cylinder coil packs to give wasted spark? If can U2U me that would be sound.

Cheers George

I bought the board and processor for my version 2.2 unit and sourced the rest myself. The basic kit was £50 from bill and the remaining parts sourced mainly from RS and Maplins cost me about £60 including bits to build a stimulatot unit.
It did take a lot of time working out what i required and unless you really want to do as much as possible yourself then i would just buy a complete kit.

Ok, looks like I'll probably buy a kit.

Been pricing up between Bill and Diyautotune (US). Exchange rate means from the US it's a good chunk less!

Anyone any idea what import duty is? Is it VAT at 17.5%? Plus delivery charge?

Cheers,
James

Depends on whether its UPS or Royal Mail /Parcelfarce as the handling charges differ.

Expect IIRC around £12 plus the VAT per parcel

Cheers

Any idea of P&P to UK? Can't find it on the DIYAutotune site.

Watch out... Parcel Farce want £13:50 just to collect the VAT.

Royal Mail want £4:50, so dont have it sent by express mail.

So check what route / company they will send it via.

Slowest mail will still get it to you.

Also there is a good day+ in building one of these.

Have fun.
