Well - Omex it is then

Spoke to Omex this morning about running the duratec on one of their ECU's in light of this weekends problems

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=134813

Extremely helpful, they have done it before with no major hiccups. So fingers crossed.

The other massive benefit is that I can get it set up on a rolling road a lot easier and hopefully quicker as its a more widely used system with a lot of knowledgeable people using it.

Ok its not a cheap fix at the best part of £800 but having heard what the experienced tuners have all said I am hoping its the right decision.

I will still be resoldering the megasquirt tonight and getting that fixed to sell on. I'll test it first and check its working of course. I am pretty certain its a dry joint on the processor socket which has caused the problem.

David

Agreed, but the second part to that is get the best you can afford. This is Locost Builders after all.

David, Have you lost all confidence in MS? Just sounds to me like all your shake down problems are coming in all at once, so i wouldnt condemn it just yet. There are people out there that run MS for long periods of time without any problems.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

I have run MS for 18 months or more without problems. I have only started having issues since its now doing spark control as well and since upgrading to MS2.

I dont doubt there is anything wrong with MS at all - it certainly works very well for what it is.

My concerns have shifted from being able to map it myself on the road to just getting it set up by a pro on a rolling road, controlled environment. This is for 2 reasons - 1 being I want to get the best out of it having spent so much money on the damn thing, 2 being its easier to see what effect the changes are making when its on a rolling road. Plus its impossible for me to map the higher RPMs as the road speed is just way too high (90mph in 3rd...)

I have learnt a huge amount by doing it myself with megasquirt, and the car itself is (or was) running pretty well up until the latest issue. I dont regret using MS at all but have been toying with changing to Omex anyway due to the reasons above.

Theres something to be said for listening to the advice of people who tune cars day in, day out who have experience with both MS and Omex and they all say the same thing - the Omex is much easier to map and a lot more refined around the edges which essentially results in a more driveable car.

Probably not now.

Sorry chaps.

I'll be there anyway if its any consolation

The change to the omex ecu shouldnt take too long, its a case of how well it runs and assumes no other problems in the mean time.

If I find an obvious problem with the MS tonight then i will just refit that for stoneleigh and risk the journey.

But if there is no obvious fault, then I am not risking breaking down on the motorway.

Well, I have ordered the Omex and it should be shipping today.

Andy who I have been dealing with is very helpful and knowledgeable indeed. He is going to do his best to write me a base map for the engine based on their experience of setting up similar spec engines and based on my current megasquirt map.

It shouldnt be a major job to swap it over as the connections are virtually identical, I just need to splice the Omex ECU into the existing MS loom.

Then its a case of how well it runs with the base map (if at all) and how quickly I can hone the map at least for just cruising if nothing else.

Then its a trip to either ATSpeed or Northampton Motorsport for a dyno session.

out of interest, why omex over, for example, emerald?

I need blended map and tps tables for my engine and I dont think Emerald are able to do this.

Similarly I know that omex have run supercharged duratecs in house (they built a westfield demo car with one in the same setup as mine) so they have experience in house of these engines with superchargers bolted on...

My omex 600 on a zetec has worked without any problems for the last four years. Sent it back to them for a free firmware upgrade last year. Software is very simple and Andy is easily available for advice and free base maps when I changed from silver to blacktop to ST170. Only issue is no pwm cam control on the 600.
