In Tank Fuel Pump

I;m looking at using an In tank fuel pump, have seen some universal ones, that just have an outlet and 2 terminals, my question is (as daft as it may be) do you just connect 12v to it and dunk it in the tank???, sounds like a home made bomb to me, but i can;t see any other way they work.

any help greatly appreciated.

the SD1 rover used to have had an electriconic fuel pump in the tank the terminals were on the outside of the tank with the pump itself on the inside of the tank... very reliable until the fuel tank breather pipe got pinched at one end and the car would only go for 10 minutes then cutout ...twas funny figuring that one out

OR

The pick-up inlet pre filter mesh sock got blocked with accumulated debris. That also was fun, Very random stoppages, instant restart 10 minutes later.

How does the MGF one fit in the tank?
I have a Mk3 Golf unit which is pump/swirl pot combined but sits in the bottom of the tank with electrical connections inside the tank.

I'll try and take a picture some time but .....

its a large plastic pot. this is the swirl tank. Off the side is a little mess to feed the pot when there isn't enough fuel in the swirl. Its on long springs so its top is always trying to be pushed out of the tank. The top is a round bit of plastic with the fuel feed and return (which returns into the swirl, the top of the swirl is open so fuel can get in as well). On the pins holding the top to the bottom (which slide so the springs can push the top up) is mounted the fuel level sender. all the wires go to the top via a nice connector.

Does that make sense?
