Megasquirt questions

Hello all

I have just wired up the loom and connected the MS for the first time and I seem to have a couple of problems

The first one is my fuel pump will turn on but the feed from the ms unit will not keep it switched on through the relay. The light bottom left of megatune stays on for around 5 seconds

It seems to work fine for the simulator (or will it turn it back on when started??)

When I have the injectors plugged in there is a clicking noise, it only makes it the once, similar to that of a relay, I wired the 12v injector cable to the positive side, fingers crossed that’s correct.

And my manifold and coolant sensors are reading 10C too cold

As said, the MS runs the fuel pump intiallly for a few seconds prior to starting, it only runs again once a Tach signal is recived.

I thought in everything that i'd read that Megasquirt gave out a -ve pulse to the injectors to make them fire.

ahh cool... sounds like everything is working ok

it was a 'kinda want to make sure' post

not using GM sensors but have already used easy therm, both are reading -10C try again tho

and i have been reading lots... honest, just learning more each day

Megasquirt grounds the injector the time it does this is the injection duration time.

I thought id carry this thred on

Just tried turning my duratec over and I am no recieving any RPM signal in mega tune?

Checked the VR sensor and I cannot move it any nearer and it marrys up perfect with the tool that is supplied around 1mm distance

Buzzed through all connectors and they are going where they are supposed to be (vr sensor to edis, edis to MS)

PIP and SAW are only around 150mm long and shielded

VR sensor I've changed the cable from shield to twisted and swapped the polariety just in case I had it wrong

Is there any way you can test the edis unit just incase thats not working?

and it works when the stim is attached

Right just checked and i have spark through the edis unit but still no RPM when cranking shown in mega tune

I would start looking at the PIP wire from the EDIS to the MS as this is where the MS gets its RPM signal from.

Is the MS board properly configured for running EDIS ignition?

But, just separated the wires and now got signal back to the ms unit .. happy now

just got to figure out why im not getting any fuel out of the injectors

I wasn't getting any fuel out of my injectors and ripped the wiring apart trying to sort it.

It turned out that the injectors were stuck closed and the short cranking pulse was not enough to free them. I put 12v across them straight from the battery to test them and that freed them off.

They have been fine ever since!!

I also had sticking injectors with my Kawasaki T/Bs Mate cleaned them on an ASNU machine but 2 took 7 attempts before they came up to scratch .

Injectors now working stuck 12v across em and all ok

just working on getting it started, but i cante change the crank timing to trigger return as here

Right spent today trying to get the car started, got RPM Signal in Megatune, got spark from the edis unit and got fuel pumping through the injectors.

Playing around and I've managed to get the duratec popping from both the throttle bodies and exhaust so its firing but not all together

I've played around with the cranking pulses and required fuel but looking at the spark plugs they are all sooted up.

so after today I've got a couple more questions, the edis unit has the limp mode set to 10degrees, when cranking megatune reads 10.4 is this correct? which would mean the timing is correct, (not got a light and not overly sure where the timing marks are on a Duratec)

And. I have set the injectors to simultaneous and wired each injector individually so each one will buzz through from pins 32, 33, 34 and 35

At the moment these are randomly placed, should these be set in a particular way?

Apologies to ask, but I’ve been looking through all of the manuals again but still can’t find what I’m after (probably keep looking in the wrong place)

I have placed a copy of my config, if someone could have a nose to tell me where I’m going wrong.

Were you running the ignition using the EDIS before?

Have you done anything to your ignition map? If you are not sure where to start then I would be tempted to set everything to 10 degrees just to get it started. The edis will only go to limp home mode if it doesn't see the SAW signal - megatune will not know if this is happening or not and display what the MS is trying to make the advance - not necessarily what it is running at! You really need to get hold of a timing light to check it.

Have you set your req_fuel and generated a VE table? If you start getting lost go back to the default values.

Its quite common to get the wiring between the coil pack and EDIS wrong. A quick way to check is to swap the plug leads over on the two halves of the coil pack. I did this with my MJ install initially and it was doing what you describe.

Done, I take it that the Edis unit sorts this? as really the crank sensor is at 90 to TDC

Yep calibrated TPS, and not in flood clear mode (unless i want it to be)
