halfway house to wasted spark igniton?

eventually I plan to install a megsa jolt but before that would like to fit the coil pack but have is triggered by distributor - badsially replace the coil by the coil pack.

the idea is to feed 12 V to the distributor cap that then feeds the signal using the rotor arm to the appropriaqte coil pack.

has anything like this been tried?

will the low voltage, 12 V, ne enough to jump from rotor arm to the cap?

and what sort of trigger do the coil packs need? I wold expect they have the same or very similar dwell angle requirments as the coil so a driver would be needed for them.

(and in case you are wondering why, I have the coil pack but not megajolt and would like to fit the coilpack & trigger wheel/pickup rather than have them kicking about)

i can't think why it wouldn't work, but i also can't think why you'd need it to. stick a HT lead in the top of the dizzy, plug leads to the plugs and you're done. i can't think of any benefit in running a coil pack unless you've got some sort of ECU to take care of the advance

Surely what you want to do is fit the Coil pack with the Edis unit, and Vr sensor.
- Then use it in the limp-home fixed-advance mode?

Ulitmatly, not quite sure what your aiming for.

Im also planning to go down the MJ route eventually and have started amassing parts, but at the same time, see no point in starting to fit them (other than the trig wheel and sensor bracket) untill i have the MJ unit.

12v simply won't jump across the small gap between the rotor arm and distributor cap terminals. It would need actual physical contact to be made.

This is completely unworkable as Geoff says.

An electronic coil pack has very low primary resistance, so a constant dwell time is required in order to prevent excessive currents burning out the coils. This means you can't drive them from a points type system that gives a constant dwell angle.

As mentioned, you need an EDIS unit. This will interface between your trigger wheel and coil pack and provide you with a constant 10 degree advance (plus whatever advance you add with the trigger wheel/sensor location). This will allow you to get the engine running before you add your MegaJolt unit.
