citroen zx TD probs
Wondering if any of you locosters can help here
having issues with my daily hack after a new set of injecters
ok before injectors were fitted it used to start and run ok but would occasionally miss and was smokey on start up but always started fine.
tried some injecter cleaner which did improve it slightly so i decided to not bugger about and fit new injectors, old ones were pretty tired looking
so i do think it was worth doing, new leak off pipes fitted at same time. it was serviced a few months ago too so all new filters ect
now after the injector change it has a lumpy idle (kinda off beat and not the normal diesel clatter) a whiff of throttle removes the odd idle. other
than odd idle it pulls better than ever and seems overall smoother.
i know the waxstat is goosed and it seems common practice to just disconnect them as they are not much use (bosch pump fitted) now what i am thinking
is the pump was previously fiddled with to account for the old injectors and with the sticking waxstat i think it may need resetting and tuning back
in. anyone any experience of these?
what would be proper way to adjust tickover, internet not much use on adjusting these pumps all the info i found so far is on the lucas version

Not sure if this applies to the ZX but the later French diseasels have a plastic sleeve
round the upper part of the injector. This is designed to melt (according to a Citroen guy)
and forms part of the sealing mechanism. If you didn't replace these as well it may be
the cause.

Do the pump & injectors match? My Fiat Scudo van with the same engine idled badly, it had Lucas injectors & a Bosch pump. The engine got
cooked silly & a replacemnet fitted from a Xsara which had all Bosch injection gear & it ran fine.
At work we had an Escort TD to fix with poor starting & it needed the injectors overhauled, once they were right it ran very badly, knocking like
hell. Various folk had been at it trying to sort the starting & the pump timing had been advanced too far, ran fine once started with the worn
injectors but way out once they were right. Timing sorted & it ran sweet.

the timing or other pump settings is what i suspect too but i have no clue on setting the pump timing
got a manual coming for it which may help identify what does what on the pump.

Wait till the manual comes and time it up with the pins in the pullies.
The only idle adjustment iirc is the screw for the throttle stop which would just raise the rpm. Unless the pumps gimped id go for the timing
slightly out.

Try adjusting the pump position the mtg holes are slotted. Just scribe a reference mark in case you need to put it back.
Too far advanced it'll knock more, too far retarted and it'll be lumpy with white smoke, give it a try. Back nut can be a bit tricky if
turboed and Bosch though!!!

heh yeah was just reading about that on a citroen bx forum and they say about the hard to reach nut being a pig to get at. they recommended a half
moon spanner so might have to pick one of them up ready
thanks for the replies

little update on this.
got hold of a 13mm half moon spanner so i could adjust the pump timing
result= fixed car
so it does seem on these mechanical diesel's a change of injectors will affect the timing due to i guess differing flow and with no clever
computers it can't adjust to suit unlike the more modern common rail version.
here is what i did to adjust my bosch pump.
Had the car warmed up to normal running temps.
slackened all 4 bolts that holds the pump in postition but leaving the top ones tight then once running undo this and slowly moved to pump towards and
away from the engine to see what affect it had
moving away which i think is advance made it run worse and pushing back made it run evenly with the normal diesel clatter and now ticking over happily
at 900rpm instead of 1100 rpm with a nice steady idle and no hunting.
retighten bolts
job done
will try it tomorrow on a cold start and see if i need to fiddle with the cold start settings
